Trying to update from Windows 7 to Windows 10 errors and problems

Hi guys,
I have a 2015 Dell laptop running W7. I want to make it run faster and upgrade to W10. The hardware does support W10, but the W10 installation keeps failing right at the end with "windows 10 installation failed in the safe_os phase with an error during boot. 0xC1900101 - 0x20017"
Ive uninstalled all programs and done a Disc Cleanup. Im currently trying to defrag the harddrive but it keeps getting 'stuck'.
I can still see loads of redundant folders where the uninstalled programs were.
I basically want to start from scratch and get W10 on the laptop.
Any tips/advice very gratefully received!

Try it as a clean install as opposed to an upgrade ...?0

...and consider replacing HDD w/ SSD at same time?googler said:Try it as a clean install as opposed to an upgrade ...?0 -
"I basically want to start from scratch and get W10 on the laptop."
In that case:
1. download windows 10 from microsoft and either make a bootable USB drive or DVD ROM
2. boot from that USB / DVD
3. when asked, choose advanced, delete all the partitions on your HDD, create new ones.
4. Windows 10 setup will then format the new partitions and install.
Make sure you know your W7 key in case you need it to activate (it may activate anyway without it)
As above, if before doing this you replace your spinning HDD with a SSD you are likely to see a dramatic performance increase. Also make sure you have a copy of any data on your old system that you need eg photos, documents etc also any application install media that you need.

Do not create new partitions at this stage. Just tell the installer to install Windows in the unallocated space. The Windows installer will create all the necessary partitions.Olinda99 said:"I basically want to start from scratch and get W10 on the laptop."

Hmm, I think Im going to take it to an expert. Ive spent the better part of 3 days trying to speed up the laptop and get Windows 10 on it and Im getting nowhere!!
How much do you think it woudl take someone to get Windows 10 working on it? £50? £200?
Thanks0 -
After various messages about getting your PC ready, checking for enough space, agreeing to licence terms etc you should get to a screen that has 2 options - upgrade or custom (advanced).dllive said:
I dont see this screen, it doesnt give me an optionOlinda99 said:

Select custom, you will see a list of partitions.
Select each partition in return and delete each one
Then click next and windows will create new partitions and install.0 -
I definitely dont see that screen. Ive gone through the installation process 4 times. Ive tried doing the direct download, and also downloading it to a USB drive and installing from there. Neither ways show me the screen you mention. Some of the video tutorials Ive watched do show that screen, so not sure why Im not seeing it!

Honestly, for that money, you can get a new machine.
Have you actually tried it as a totally clean install, creating install media (USB etc) and putting a brand new SSD or HDD in it?0
