If its washing that would be done over the weekend then doing it earlier and using the dryer because of rain would be cheaper than waiting until the weekend when the kWh price will be around 8p higher and the SC over 20p higher.Ultrasonic said:Doing something that leads to extra use of a tumble-dryer will almost certainly end up costing you more money rather than saving money.
The SC will be higher from tomorrow no matter when you use the power.
So is irrelevant.

No. Read back through what I said again.wild666 said:

The standing charge element is irrelevant since that will be paid no matter what.0 -
Sorry but I genuinely thought the posts at the start of the thread may encourage others to do the same in the belief they'd be saving money, so for their benefit I thought it would be worth explaining why this may not be the case.Mstty said:

I think you may be missing my main point here. You were saying you were having to use a tumble dryer as it is wet outside today, implying that if the weather were better you might not. For you and others where this is the case I'd say it's an actively BAD idea to be doing extra washing today.Mstty said:I agree fully not using a tumble dryer is the best option for a decent money saving per year.
As an example our tumble dryer (rated E or F) will be on 5 times a week over winter (judged at Oct-Apr) at a cost of 27p per use on our new fixed tariff starting 1st April. So that's a cost of £35.10 for the year.
This was a tongue in cheek post to have a laugh about what people might be doing today with a big rise tomorrow.

I hope you bought enough flasks to store all that boiling water to make tea & coffee for the next monthvm2pensioner said:
Yes, I am heating my house for the rest of the year today. This afternoon I intend to cook and eat all next month's meals and put all the dirty crockery and cutlery through the dishwasher this evening. I've already boiled twenty-six kettles.Mstty said:I can see you are a stickler and that's fine carry on

Anyone else got a chart of how much things cost.Ultrasonic said:Doing something that leads to extra use of a tumble-dryer will almost certainly end up costing you more money rather than saving money.
Tumble dryer 1 hour current rate 19p from tomorrow 27p
Washing machine 19p from tomorrow 27pHow do you get a tumble drier to be that cheap?Mine uses 1.6kWh to "dry" a small wash that has been spun at 1400, which will cost near enough 50p from April.Mind you, I do have it on maximum-mega-super-extra-arid-Atacama Desert, which just leaves the clothes clammy rather than wringing wet (I've no idea why it needs all those settings, they are all varying degrees of soaking wet, "dry" is dry- how hard can it be?)

Unless it a heat pump based drier, it is likely using more than 1kW, and even then will be taking longer than an hour to dry too, so more than 1 unit per dry.facade said:Mstty said:

Didn't think of heat pumps, mine has an element in the back- I'll get a heat pump one when it gives up, if it halves the cost to 25p a dry, I'd still need 1600 drys (one a day for 5 years) to get the money back if I bought one on a whim.
