My Huawei Mate 10 cost about £280 equivalent 4+ years ago and still going strong, Android 10, battery still lasts all day and I have a new one to fit when needed.
Dual SIM: EE SIM only monthly 3.2GB £3 and still giving me inclusive EU roaming (so far), Iliad (Italy) 50GB monthly 8€.
    Evolution, not revolution

I always buy a 2 or 3 years old premium phone for a third of the price. Like cars, let someone else take the depreciation.
Depreciation is only relevant if you intend you sell your phone. Some of us (myself included) buy the latest brand spanking new phone and use it until it breaks or apps stop working on it d/t ancient firmware (whichever occurs first).

I bought a Samsung Galaxy 8 new sim free about 4.5 years ago. Granted it was a pricey phone, but it's still going strong with a sim only contract and I'd expect it to last at least another couple of years.

Currently 20 months into a 2 year contract with an iPhone 11. Phone is still immaculate, battery life is 90% and frankly there isn’t much difference in the spec of a new iPhone so I’ll go sim only in August saving £30 a month.

Poco (Xiaomi)X3, excellent phone, £165 and it's recently updated to Android 12.
S.I.M. only with Lebara (Vodafone) £4.90/month rolling 30 day tariff, no contract.Unlimited/unlimited/3Gb data. Why pay more?

Work got me an iPhone XR a few years ago and my personal phone is a £150 Xiaomi Android phone. There isn't much to choose between them although the price difference is enormous. The Xiaomi has a slightly less irritating user interface. The iPhone will probably last longer, if I don't break it.

Same here. Works fine, battery lasts two days.
Will probably replace the phone after 3 years.
The SIM costs me £6 a month on Plusnet.

I'm a big technology enthusiast but I've never bought a phone on contract in the last 15 years and never paid more than £240 for a phone, which I've used with a SIM-only SIM.

I can't see why anyone wants to pay over £1,000 for a phone.

And why anyone buys an iPhone is a mystery to me!
A 2 or 3 year old iPhone can be good value. I bought a 2 year old XS max for £330 a year ago and it should still rock the latest software for at least another 2 or 3 years. If the battery does go then apple will replace it for £49.
If j want to sell this phone I’d get a good chunk of money back.
It works out good value for me as I like nice tech and not cheap tat.
I didn’t know this.  Does Apple replace any battery even on iPhone 6?  Do you just take it into an iPhone store?
My granddaughter has one and her battery life is very very short.  She’s only 12 so a new battery could be what she needs - although she will say she needs a new iPhone!!   Thanks,

The iPhone 6 is just a little too old. Batteries subject to stock. It’s also not on the latest security patches. Which might be a concern for use by a 12 year old. So you might want to consider something a little newer.
