The classiest 4x4 is Mitsubshi Pajero Evo Ralliart.

    Thanks to both.
I would never say this in real life but the car I buy next I will keep for several years and want to impress people. Sorry, that is how I feel.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but the car you're buying will cost what? £25k?

You need to realise that while you show up at the traffic light with your 5 year old second hand diesel, someone in a brand new toyota (or volkswagen) will probably have paid more for their car. So what exactly are you impressing with? Most of those people could've bought your car (or better), but decided to be more sensible...

Check the insurance costs if you haven't already as the X5 can be extraordinarily high as they are usually near the top of most stolen car lists.

Personally I wouldn't say either brand is anything special anymore. Our Hyundai is better put together than our Mercedes and half the cost to run.

If you are just planning to run it on the road and performance isn't the big factor the the 4 pot engine in the Mercedes will be fine, it is more reliable than the 6 pot counterpart anyway. Little bit louder but you don't hear that on the inside.

I've re-read my OP and to me, it's clear IE the question I raised but no one has really answered it.

I've done my homework and know approximately how much both cost, tyres, brakes replacement costs, insurance costs mog and servicing. I just wanted to know which car in your estimation looked flashier/classier but no one has answered that question.

Those that mentioned "Land Rovers" have not read up on the problems that come with that car.

What demographic are you hoping to impress?  Friends, potential partners, random strangers?

In the words of Shania Twain..."that don't Impress me much"

So in answer to your question...neither!!

How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 3.24% of current retirement "pot" (as at end December 2025)

Probably because it's now the type of car that the majority of people will least want to own. Second hand values will ultimately plummet.

You know what I would suggest OP should do?

They should go and look at cars from other brands. Actually sit in them and see what you get for the price. Because you are paying almost entirely for the badge. The X5 is a very good car but you will have a much more comfortable well kitted out suv style car for the same price new probably and a greener one too.

The thing to realise is nobody is impressed by a BMW or a merc these days. I used to drive these. But they are two a penny nowadays. And every man and his dog has one. And honestly outside of the top of the range models neither are particularly brilliant or cool in todays market either.

When you think people are driving round in teslas - they have the wow factor now. Not a 4 year old BMW.

Our neighbour has always had an Audi through work. Due to a change in job for the first time in years he had to buy his own car and has bought a Peugeot 308, and would never go back to the Audis he just thought were better. Mainly cos he’s seen what his own money can buy him.

I don't think anyone can answer it, because it's too subjective. Personally either of those cars make me assume either hairdresser or retired accountant, neither of which is particularly cool. I can't claim to be cool either since I drive a people carrier. Neither of them will get you looks anywhere, except for people watching to see if you hit anything trying to fit an enormous car into a small parking space.

The X5 is especially impressive as (IIRC) it's got less internal space than the X3, despite being bigger. Both are smaller inside than the 5/3 series estates. I've been in an X6 and whilst it was pretty nice, it always just seemed pretty pointless too.

If you want to stand out a bit and make your friends say "cool car", then have a look at older Jaguars. Or some sort of roadster. Or something like an E-Class, or a 7/8 series, or even an M5.

If it must be one of those cars, which you say your friends have. Which one do you feel makes your friend(s) look more successful? Which one are you trying to emulate?

Spinning the ask slightly, the BMW will most likely get more negative comments from people of the two. The Mercedes will have passed under the radar for most. But equally by that same equation it will also impress more people.

So if you just want to impress badge snob and not have to deal with the negative sides get the Mercedes. If you want to be more of a talking point (both positive & negative) then get the BMW.

If you actually want to impress people who know anything about cars buy something different
