Isnt the GLE 250d a four pot? That would be an absolute No for me in a large 4x4.diystarter7 said:I'm considering changing my car and have been for a while.
I've always wanted a proper 4x4.
I've been looking at 16/18 plate cars with up to 40k miles and the two models I prefer are
Mercedes GLE, 250d AMG line
or
BMW M Sport any diesel engine
I will go for a lower year one owner car if they have the pan roof and other extras but I'm happy to go without.
The X5 will be an earlier model and may go to 50k miles with FSH as I may go for the 7 seats
The colours I am looking at is the black for the GLE and black or silver for the X5
Sounds corny but which car looks more classy and less gangster type, and in your opinion you'd think one that looked more classy.
Many, many thanks if you can help.
Btw, I have an old Merc, C class diesel and I think one of the injectors may have gone or timing gone as every so often there is a cloud of smoke,
light greyish smoke and this has happened several times over 12/18 months but passed its mot and cars done 50k miles a 2007 car.
I'd go X5, personally. I'd one from new some years back and loved it. Drove well, handled better than you'd expect, very well finished inside.
Beware running costs of any of them though - They're hard on tyres and mine was on 20 inch rims so the tyres were £250 each and it went through a set a year.
Fuel economy isnt great either. My 3.0d did late 20s mpg.0 -

Yea true. Would have to be hybrid like a Lexus RX450h or EV.motorguy said:
Big petrol 4x4s are rare and usually quite expensive (because they are rare).DrEskimo said:At an average mileage of 3,000 miles per year given your current car is 15yrs old and has only done 50k miles is a strong indicator that you will benefit little from a diesel.
Far better off looking at petrol, EV, or even perhaps a bike...?
They also incur even larger running costs - much higher Road Tax, and are even harder on fuel. They could be doing mid teens to the gallon.
They're also a very niche market so could be tricky to sell down the line.

Suspect most people will wonder why you are wasting so much money on fuel............. Meanwhile they'll continue planning their early retirement.diystarter7 said:
I would never say this in real life but the car I buy next I will keep for several years and want to impress people. Sorry, that is how I feel.1 -
At least you are honest, even if its the polar opposite to me. It really depends on who you are trying to impress.diystarter7 said:I would never say this in real life but the car I buy next I will keep for several years and want to impress people. Sorry, that is how I feel.
A while back we got a new 2 seater car on a 3 year deal with the intent to give it back at the end when hopefully we'd then need more seats. When the car was under 1 year old we got lots of comments from random strangers, when the car was under 2 years old they'd stopped in London but occasionally still happened outside and in the last year the only thing that ever got commented on was the L plates for the Mrs on a 4.8L car.
It clearly depends on who you hang with etc but round these parts a 6 year old car isn't going to impress unless its a top mark, let alone in a few years when its pushing a decade.
Personally don't like oil burners nor BMW which means I'd be choosing the merc as the least worse.1 -
True story: Mrs Petriix and I were waiting to turn left at a roundabout. There's a queue of traffic backing up from the road we want to take, back onto the roundabout. A guy in an X5 pulls onto the roundabout but leaves a gap, seemingly to allow us to go in front of him. As I pull into the gap, X5 man beeps his horn aggressively and starts gesticulating his disgust that I've pulled out. I helpfully suggest that he should seek some therapy. Mrs Petriix comments "you have to be a t**t to drive one of those". Is that the kind of 'classy' you're looking for?

Whichever car you buy, a black one will never look flashy or classy unless it’s kept immaculately clean.4

Those cars will do the opposite of impress people. People don't look at people driving an SUV around town and feel impressed.diystarter7 said:Thanks to both.

I've researched both and been in both as friends have these cars and I liked them both. Servicing is more expensive on the Mercs via the main dealer.
Both cars were replaced with enw models but look similar to me. The inside of the gle has changed a lot but I can afford that.
The x5 has the opinion of 7 seats in the model I am looking at but not the GLE.
The GLE has that automatic brake and braakes for you and I'm not sure if all X5's have got that thing.
So which one appears classier to you guys.
Their thoughts tend to be more along the lines of "what is he compensating for" or "there's someone who doesn't care about the damage he is doing".
If you want to impress then there are plenty of expressive EVs that are genuinely quite classy and also take up a lot of space.6 -

Members didn't disappoint
When you're in your box are you going to be satisfied that you impressed folk by the vehicle you had? That's going to be one of life's high priorities?
As has been said, get anything listed and some will think wow amazing, others will think A-hole.
I didn't know people like this actually existed. I thought it was just something folk talked about. Now you've shown me. Thanks.5
