I used to eat tinned 'Grants Mince and Peas' as a child, I loved it - I think I tried it once when mum was in a hurry or something. For me it felt like a real treat. That said I don't fancy that or any other tinned meat now, it just doesn't appeal. Of course if it was the only thing available I could eat it, if it was that or starve, but for now I will try to fill up on veggies if/when meat is just too expensive! I think it's great for those who enjoy it though, a handy staple that doesn't need much cooking, and can be added into a pie etc.Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

You can still get 'Grants Mince and Peas' on various internet shopping channels
Beef content is 20%
At £1.60 a tin that is 61.5p per ounce of beef
Aldi lean beef mince is 16.4p per ounce
Not sure if the differential was always so big but I have never had tinned mince or stewing steak
Growing up in a household of 8 I am sure the butcher price for mince would always have been lower than buying tins
Only meat I have ever bought in tins was chicken in white wine sauce to fill vol au vents in the 80's and corned beef which is now a crazy price8 -
I never had tinned meat growing up. But I also wasn't a big meat eater as a child. I was very fussy and wouldn't eat beef, unless it was a burger and even then it had to be birdseye or mcd's. And I didn't eat chicken until my early 20's. The only pork I would eat was sausages, and again it would only be walls brand, or hotdogs. I've worked really hard to get past a lot of food aversions I had, to improve my diet as an adult. But I still don't like pork on it's own (ie, like a porkchop), and I can't stand lamb, or duck etc.
I think one of my brothers would eat the fray bento pies, or tinned curries etc, as he enjoyed fishing and they are quick and easy to heat up on the bank. My DH was/is the same. These days I'd be interesting in canning my own versions of such meals, but I don't think I possess the necessary skills or equipment yet.February wins: Theatre tickets4 -
Floss said:Slinky, I was in Farmfoods yesterday & they had 2 x 200g Kenco for £7, and B&M had them for £4.50 each.
@Floss I managed to get to Farmfoods today, they were 2 for £8 but I got 6 as still saving £1 a jar over Tesco. The Asda price has gone up to £4.90 since last Thursday.

Daz, have you tried tins of chicken in white sauce? Very nice with boiled rice, or just on toast.2025 Fashion on the ration

Yesterday I had a trip to Sainsbugs for odds & ends that I can't seem to get online (they either don't stock them at all or they're always out of stock) and came home with a pack of cooking bacon. It took time and patience this morning to untangle it all but it was worth while as it's all full rashers of streaky bacon. There's enough for 3 meals for 2 so good value at 75p for a 500g pack
I also got 2 tins of fruit filling for pies, crumbles or topping cheesecake and the like (one black cherry and one summer fruits), not something I normally buy, but at £1 per tin (usually £1.35) I thought they'd be a good cupboard standby. One is bb May 23 and the other bb Feb 24. I think I'll manage to use them before then!
I have baking powder on my next shopping list as I know there's not much left.
Be kind to others and to yourself too.8
