E.ON price increase just in – to fix or not to fix?

I've just received the email... i'm currently on the Next Flex variable tariff and these are the figures i'm looking at:

Estimated annual costs until 31 March 2022:
Electricity: £988.14
Gas: £617.55

Estimated annual costs from 1 April 2022:
Electricity: £1405.57
Gas: £1037.01

An overall annual increase of £836.89  :s

The email includes the option to switch to a different tariff (Next Online v11) with prices fixed for a year that works out to be the same cost as the estimates given above for the variable tariff starting April 2022. To qualify for the fixed tariff i'd need to agree to having a smart meter fitted (which i've so far resisted having).

Should i stick or fix? And will i regret having a smart meter if i do?

Why would you regret having a smart meter? It will give you access to TOU tariffs which can save you a lot of money.

My 80 year old father had one installed a number of years back, it completely messed up his billing and he ended up paying hundreds above what he should have been due to miscalculations that we’ve only just got to the bottom of.

Maybe it was issues related to the first gen meters and things have improved now.

If they have, would fixing in for a year be a good decision?

That V11 tariff has dropped off their website now. Cheapest available is their Net Flex which is a variable tariff.
Choices, choices, I was a little slow in taking the fixed V11 yesterday, looking likely I'll just take the V12 now.

Looks like each new tariff lasts about a week! Online V12 is £183 pa more than Online v11 for me. Online v11 was same as SVR. I think I will be sticking with SVR. Get my gas from SSE, where the new SVR is 120% higher than my current fix!

What?! I literally received the email last night and was about to pull the trigger this morning, and it's been removed.

v12 is a fixed tariff as far as i can see (Next Online v12), but is considerably higher than the variable Next Flex tariff that the v11 fixed tariff matched, until it vanished!

I've edited my post above now, I stated the V11 was variable, it wasn't of course. Also yes you are correct there is a price difference with the V12, me again no knowing my a*** from my elbow.

A decision, the Next Flex (variable) now has the same tariff as the yesterday's V11, now pulled. You get a discount for paying via DD. The V12 put on today is as you say has those increases but doesn't state a discount for paying by DD.

Concern is though that prices rise even further later in the year and the variable Next Flex rates go up again.

It's a bit of a gamble really, will potential price rises exceed the rates of the best fixed deal.
  • If you've had the email offering the v11 online tarriff, then why not ring EON Next up and see if they will honour it.

I just called E.ON - was on hold for 10 minutes and the lady who answered said that V11 was no longer available and only V12 is available.  She said the offers change all the time and that it is not possible to go to V11.
