Diagnostic Fee - Fair?

£42 is what i got charged through a independent garage, I thought it was reasonable until the garage charged me for a retest of £26 that only involved clearing error codes and a reset of the steering angle sensor, all you do is turn the steering wheel full lock left full lock right back to center position.
I have never had a garage charge for a retest.

I have read every post on this thread and can see both sides of the argument BUT one thing i cannot understand is if the original poster had said to the dealer - fix my car then surely the mechanic would have had to use the diagnostic tool himself/ herself to progress the repair so really if the car was repaired using manufacturers parts and time by the dealer the dignostic test should not be billed as a separate cost ,only my opinion ,feel free to shoot me down

A garage doesn't charge extra for using any other tools. The software cost for diagnostics is minimal, the hardware even less??¿?? A ramp costs a lot more. I am sure people in the (ex)trade will be along soon to make excuses🙂. Diagnostic fees should have been abolished years ago when the EU standardised the 16 pin connector"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0

Classic car is the way forward. Shame there is not enough to go round"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0
