Having just returned from a few days away, so everything possible* turned off in the house, for 3 full 24 hour periods, we still used 1.37kwh of electricity a day (but no gas**), the cost of which (including both standing charges) was £1.17 per day.

House was 12c on our return.   4 nights / 3 days unheated.

So that's an annual cost of £427, or £35 a month, without even being here!!!!  (we're on Eon V12, not the cap)

*only Sky Box, Fridge/freezer plus hard wired items (alarm etc) left on, using an average draw of 57 watts.

** Good job, otherwise we've got a leak!!!
Don't forget even if you aren't there to add on your gas standing charge of what £85-90? Even though you weren't using gas the SC was still spending your hard earned money.

Interesting that the house went down to 12oC

That does include both standing charges!

12 is what the hallway thermostat clicked on at when we switched it on.

Some parts of the house may have been warmer, as they get some sun, although it's been quite cold and cloudy these last couple of days.
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

This is starting to go "off piste"
We started talking about standbye power use and now we are discussing total numbers of electrical equipment that may or may not be plugged in.....

Sorry about that MouldyOldDough That was me that that caused it.

Just quick note to other poster though then no more. promise

It also says "according to the EST, the average household has 41 electrical appliances"
    41,  What would they be?

Note is just says 41 total electrical appliances, rather than 41 electrical appliances potentially plugged in and on all the time. It doesn't seem an unbelievably high number to me.

Good point and youre right. I can see now after counting mine how it could be higher than i thought.

We have not used CH for a month now and the house has not dropped  below 17 degrees at all!

If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.

Same here @MouldyOldDough the house has had no central heating on wince 10th April.

However it has been occupied and other sources of heat will have been present such as humans and the hot water heating up daily in the tank and the heat coming out. Oven/kettle/hob and microwave use etc so I would think that would add up to a few degrees?

Generally we have kept between 17-19oC most morning and we are early rises before the sun gets to the house so pretty good.

We put a lot of this down to the EPC rating of the house and the fact it receives heat from the sun every part of the day in different rooms. As we have windows and doors on every side of the house.

Whatever it is (mild weather as well) it's been a cheap April for us energy wise 425 kWh used and we are all electric 4 bed detached house ASHP.

Well - all I can say is you are lucky !! The outside temp. was 4 deg C yesterday morning here and the heating was off - the thermometer in the hall read 12 deg C when we came downstairs.

Still that is 8 degrees warmer than outside so not a bad uplift and less to get to a "comfortable temp"

There was someone on here that insisted their house would match the outside temp to the same degree if they didn't have their central heating on but I think we can dispell this myth.

Unusual yes, but not a myth.

A house with virtually no heat generation, (nothing on standby), minimal hot water, low thermal mass, no direct sunlight (north facing slope of a hillside/valley) may not quite reach ambient, but will get close (and sometimes will be lower than outside, as the day warms up).
Add higher altitude and exposure to wind...

E.g how warm is your garage/shed?

    @k_man

To qualify the statement this was for an occupied house I will try and find the thread later and didn't apply to uninsulated garages or sheds.

I questioned the statement at the time but hey ho nice to get some results for others occupying their insulated homes👍

Although we are getting off the subject of standby consumption the following may be of interest.

I have a detached annex. It is a stable and hay loft that I had converted over 30 years ago. It is about 170 years old, brick built and obviously not cavity wall insulated although the walls have been dry lined. It is has gas central heating.

It is rarely used in winter and I have during some winters shut off the water, gas and electricity. I have a (battery powered) thermometer recording external and internal temperatures and it almost never gets down to freezing internally.

Most winters I don't shut off water and gas and leave the thermostat on froststat(4C) and the gas consumption is minimal. So the thermal gain even in winter is enough for considerable warmth to be retained  in the fabric.

To pre-empt any queries there is absolutely no damp in the property - monitored over 30 years.

Lucky, I use central heating every day and the temperature drops to 15 degrees most nights. Joys of living in solid brick walled house.
