Royal Mail - Certficate of Posting

I posted a letter using a certificate of posting on 27th January -  the letter failed to arrive
What is the next step ?
tracking, compensation etc ...

If I was half as smart as I think I am - I'd be twice as smart as I REALLY am.

Was there anything of intrinsic value in the letter? If not then I doubt there is a claim from Royal Mail, other than for a refund of the postage perhaps.

I echo this, RM will cover provable loss if there was something in the envelope of value and was not on their prohibited list (cash and vouchers for instance are not covered). Otherwise you can claim for the cost of the stamp.

Tracking and insured services are available for important/valuable documents. Who is to say that the letter hasn't arrived?  Your compensation will be some first class stamps if the claim is accepted.

Certificate of posting provides exactly what it says on the tin, a certificate to prove that you posted something. It doesnt provide tracking nor additional compensation.

After 10 days you can claim for its loss, for a basic letter is postage, for something of value with basic evidence is 6x postage or something with additional evidence is up to £20.

What is it you sent? Why do you believe its not been delivered?

If you just posted standard first or second class you can claim for up to £20 if you can show the item has value, if the item doesn't arrive by Thursday (10 working days).
If you can't prove the value of the item, you'll get six first class stamps as compensation.
See Royal Mail’s retail compensation policy for lost items | Royal Mail Group Ltd
    and make a claim here.
    Claims Centre (royalmail.com)

Also that information was fairly easy to find from a quick internet search. Did you not think to check Royal Mails website first?

From a legal perspective, something posted first class (with proof of posting) is deemed to have arrived 2 working days later, unless the contrary can be proven.

So, as some have implied above, context is key. What was it you posted and who is saying it hasn't arrived?

But in terms of the OPs compensation question the only relevant timeline is 10 working days.

If you are serving legal papers, then yes proof of postage is all thats required.

If you are trying to get the value of your item back from Royal Mail then need to wait 10 working days and then follow their process.

A benefits claim form to DWP and DWP tell me that it has not arrived

That would be a consequential loss as the form itself has no monetary value. Consequential losses are specifically excluded under Royal Mail's terms of carriage.

So its of no direct value and so you can reclaim your postage after 10 days.
