Your post reminded me of this that I read on Facebook today 😀. It was in reply to the question is it okay to eat a tin of food that was two years out of date. What did you do in the end?17

zcrat41 said:Hello, quick question for those more knowledgeable than me. I've just found 20 or so cans of Magners Cider which went out of date a year ago.1) would you drink them
2) would you take them to the church social tonight and give them to others?
I recall reading that the tinned food Scott left at base camp was found about 70 years later and was still edible.
As long as the tin isn't dented or damaged and food is cooked properly it's fine. We're too obsessed by dates.
Most food can also be frozen, many shop, especially m&s say not to freeze but this is because freezing usually affects the appearance but has no effect on the taste.New Years Resolution (Jan 2023) was to take early retirement followed by a career change. Doesn't always look good on coming out the can, but tastes absolutely fine. I tend to slightly water down soups with solids as they're closer then to what we had as a child but there is no problem before the water gets added in the saucepan.💙💛 💔8 -
As I live alone, with the price of tins of corned beef being rather more than usual when I buy a tin and open it I cut it in half and freeze half for another time so I have half a tin which does me for a salad plus a sandwich or two so a couple of meals from half a can.I'm not a big eater but would find eating a large tin a bit too much so it freezes beautifully and is prefect when defrosted, small tins are just not very economical for me

I managed to stretch the last tin of corned beef I had to four meals for the two of us - thin slices in a round of sandwiches each with some pickle, a couple of slightly thicker slices each with salad and the rest made four corned beef/onion/potato pasties that did us for two meals with veg and a bit of mash. A bit of lateral thinking helps! Useful to know though that it freezes well.
I'm about to do a grocery order for delivery on Tuesday and am trying to keep it down to the minimum of just basics but by golly it's costing a heck of a lot more than it used to do. I've noticed some items that were Aldi price matched are dearer, even though they're still supposedly price matched - presumably even Aldi's isn't as cheap as it once was.Not that it makes any difference to me since we don't have one near us. I think I may use some of my Nectar points to re-stock on a few store cupboard items.
Be kind to others and to yourself too.12 -
I was going to use a can of cider in a casserole, it was out of date by 4 months, it was a bit flat and rancid tasting. So didnt use it.
I also had an out of date Pepsi max and it tasted like mouth wash.
I do think it's down to storage, they were both in the garage, with hot and cold fluctuations of temperatures.
Old fashioned way taste and smell beforehand.9 -

I'm finding it cheaper at the moment to buy fresh corned beef than canned, especially useful as we occasionally use it for sandwiches etc if it's there. At least in our local Tesco there doesn't seem to be an own brand corned beef any longer.
A local-ish Coop on Saturday unexpectedly had a huge range of yellow stickered items when I popped in at 8am so the freezer currently is very full. I had mom with me a few hours later and she took a fair amount for her freezer also. She lives alone so we're cooking for each other on occasion, especially helpful as we only live 5 minutes walk from each other now.💙💛 💔10 -
