I normally do have that attitude @Nelliegrace but we got a couple of lovely bantam purebreed pullets ten days ago and one looks poorly.I phoned around today to see if I could get a vet appointment in case it’s treatable but can’t find a vet within a reasonable drive who sees chickens (have phoned about 12 vets!). So I’ll give her a day or two to see if she pulls through but if she’s getting worse DH will need to do the honours as he has before for other chickens who’ve gotten unwell. It’s fine when it’s an elderly chicken but she’s very young, gorgeous and a real docile friendly pet who my 4yo has bonded to so it’s such a shame! We have fed back to the place we got her for as I think she was poorly when we got her, so they can keep an eye on their flock. None of our other ladies are ill though.Part time working mum | Married in 2014 | DS born 2015 & DD born 2018

We had that once, a chicken with watery eyes within days and the reputable poultry seller paid for her veterinary treatment. The hen recovered but she never laid, so she departed. At least she was quarantined, and her companion stayed well.7 -

Loving the egg chat.I grew up on a farm. Does anyone remember the old farm hen houses. Probably house 40 odd birds with nest boxes all the way round on the outside. I had an old one that had been on the farm since the 30's as my playhouse (this was the 80's). I LOVEd my little house - named it Henridge cottage. Had hours and hours of fun in their making house, meals from fruit from the orchard, butter from buttercups. ''Twas idyllic. Wouldn't let my Dad get rid of it for donkeys years after!10

Getting a step closer, Mr L mentioned he still had a lot of the old fencing and was eyeing up part of the gardenYou cant beat a fresh egg. Supermarket ones can be months old before they hit the shelves . We are lucky here in NI that we haven't had the egg shortages you guys have had. We eat a lot of eggs, I hard boil half a dozen at a time , handy to have in the fridge for a quick snack , Mr L takes them in his lunch box to help fill him up. Mum even bought one of those egg slicers, shes taken to enjoying an egg salad sandwich - with salad cream - proper old schoolHad to sign on for JSA today. I finished my sick note back in May and didnt ask for any more, Im so much better and ready to find work. Only Im not finding it very easy , seems us oldies are arent employers first choice, esp when being a carer as well. JSA wont be paying me , just my stamp, closer I get to pension age, my missing years mean I have to have full stamp till then otherwise I wouldn't bother signing onAnybody been buying plants this year? We took a run out to the garden centre we used in the past, and OMG, talk about price rises
Im not 100% sure but I think theres really weird protocol rules around plants so a great excuse to hike up the prices. So Ive been buying from Home Bargains and Lidl and very impressed with the quality . Think Ive spent about £40 this year and have filled all my pots and planters and had some spare to fill gaps in the flower beds , garden is looking very colourful, although Im having to water - cant mind when we last had rain - 3 weeks ago maybe
