You sign up on the app and supermarkets (from my use of the app its Spar, Co-op and Budgens), independent shops and some eating chains. For a few pounds - you can buy items of food that would have gone to landfill. It's known by TGTG as a 'magic bag'. A friend of a friend uses it most weeks and picks up her magic bag the night before she does her weekly shop, so she doesn't buy what's in the magic bag.
I bought one from Budgens for £4. Contents were:
. 6x Muller Light and Rice pots with 6-9 days on the UB
. Onken big pot with date mid Feb.
. 3x Rolo desert twin packs
. 3x Profiteroles desert twin packs
. Bonne Maman strawberry mousse twin pack
. 2x packs of ham ends/pieces
. Pack of snack size sausage rolls
. Small Melton Mowbray pork pie
. Yorkshire Provender Tomato and Wensleydale soup
. .Breaded chicken goujons
. Bernard Matthews breaded turkey escalopes
. Green beans
. Fresh basil
Guessing this stuff cost about £34 normally in Budgens. Some of the products had prices on the packaging. All the products bar the yogs had today's date. Frozen ham, turkey, pork pie and goujons. Had the sausage rolls for lunch. Soup for lunch tomorrow.
Next time I will decide to buy a magic bag is to change the options to vegetarian. As the meat isn't particular nice looking, bar the goujons. Though an independent deli shop which has won awards for its diversity and service since the lockdowns uses GTGT. Their magic bags must be amazing.

round here its mostly costa, occasionally toby carvery or rarely a garage based budgens. Have tried the costa one (3 sandwiches, not especially impressed) and toby (decent sized 1-2 people portion, but only available at 9.30pm long after our dinner time). My son used it in London, found best value from posh restaurants rather than corner shops.

It’s not that great round my way. Haven’t tried it but it’s convenience stores or garages. The bakeries look good but not always good times for working people.1

I can see it appealing to a family that enjoys processed foods, is open-minded and organised enough to meal plan.
I've got nothing against a pot-luck meal, but would have to radically change my eating habits to want to sign up to this.No man is worth crawling on this earth.
So much to read, so little time.0 -
Seems to me you’d have to work/live within walking distance of somewhere or have free parking. The nero’s and costa’s Near me would involve driving and parking which means it isn’t worth it with the additional costs.
I might have a look next time I’m at my workplace, but doesn’t work for me from home due to travelling and parking costs.0 -
Got some great stuff from my local Greek deli.1

Not come across this particular app, but any initiative that that aims to reduce food waste has to be a good thing. We have a local 'Community Fridge' where you can put in and take out what you want - stores donate their expiring items and gardeners etc can put in any gluts of fruit and veg etc. I've not actually visited it myself yet but heard they were desperately trying to give away a dozen turkeys on Xmas Eve evening0

I tried it a couple of times. First bag from simply fresh was a good mixture of fresh stuff. The second and third times were multiple loaves of bread that were only any use if you’d got a huge freezer. And microwave burgers etc - not my usual food of choice. I gave up after that. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
Used it a couple of times for morrisons boxes that were worth it, but they've been taken off. Seems to be mostly spar around here and one bakery chain, but nothing really 'local' anymore
This is what was in one of them
