It is grinding and squeaking away reporting 26.04kWh of load.

The load is measued in kW. 26kW sounds plausible for a reasonable size boiler when it has just fired up. It should reduce as the flame is modulated downward and the return water gets warmer.

kWh is a quantity of energy, not the power.

Going back to the meter readings you posted previously:

    Electricity
    01/04/21: 21012
    14/01/22: 28780
= 7768 kWh between April and January

    Gas
    13/08/21: 6939
    14/01/22: 7561
    = 622 m3 = 7050 kWh between August and January

For the electricity you can do a meter sanity test (thanks forum user @Gerry1) This will check the meter isn't recording extra use by switching everything off at the consumer unit.  Then switch each circuit on one by one and monitor the meter to see if there's any suspect use.

There's also the question over tariff changes raised above, and still the anomoly over the October reads.  Only thing I can think for that is if you can post the entire bill (redact any personal information, MPAN/MPRN, meter serial etc) for forumites to look over for any other smoking guns.

I have just googled it and found the boiler should use about 3.1m3 per hour flat out.

3.1m3 per hour is around 34kWh so consistent with what you saw I think.

Meters were switched to smart meters 11/12/2017.
    Elec meter reading is 028789
    Gas Meter reading is 084748
OK, so in four years and one month you've used 28789kWh of electricity and 84748kWh of gas. That's roughly 7000kWh of electricity and 20750kWh of gas per year. Both those numbers are very high, roughly twice what I would expect for:
... an average size 3 bedroom semi-detached house. UPVC Double glazed, Walls have had extra insulation added, the loft is double insulated so fairly efficient. A new boiler was installed in 2014 with a smart thermostat to control usage.
I'm all out of ideas for tonight, but you should complete that electricity meter sanity test (it might reveal an unexpected load somewhere).

  • Bit of a long shot, but don’t suppose you have a hot tub or underfloor heating do you?
  • Thanks QrizB

I am planning on giving it a test tomorrow.

  • How long do you have the gas central heating on for and what is the thermostat set at?
you mention being ill, I assume you are at home 24/7 and have the GCH in all day as you haven’t mentioned how long you are at home or even if anyone works.

Have you tried to reduce your consumption to see if that helps?
very often it’s lifestyle choices that can cause high bills no matter how much you get the meter checked

No hot tub or underfloor heating.
  • The hearing is on to take the chill off on a morning and on an evening.

The nest is set to bring the temp up over about 3 hours.

    have been checking everything today.

Elec was pegged at around 0.850kWh

have had every circuit out and checked resistance, loops, earth leakage and everything has passed with flying colours.

Then turned every item back on, one by one recording the usage differences.

after everything was back on it was hovering around 0.350kWh as have seen before.

will see if it creeps back up.
