Maybe go for a long walk  ideally solo or with someone you can talk to about it.and decide to decide by the time you come back from it.

Personally I would do it from what you are writing. Finishing something against the battle you have had is important. A bit of a 'I'll show you to the environment'

I had a friend who had to pause his masters as had covid v badly (nearly died and was in coma for weeks).
He  then kept getting extensions  because job changes etc and busy and ill health) - he had a final deadline to  complete /hand in his  dissertation at the busiest time of the year for his work and they were closing down 2 months later so also losing his job (this masters did not help in his work or getting a new one) . I pushed  him to do that final piece (as he had already spent a lot as well on it)  and he really struggled, (as it was not relevant to his current work so took time)  but he is so happy and proud of himself now that despite  the environment  trying to stop him he managed to win and got a high mark.
I printed out his victory for him and he has it on his wall at home.

I have also made a huge decision this week  - my instinct said one thing, my head/practicality said the other, but now I have made the decision - gone with my instinct having delved in to the facts - I am light and airy. The mere fact that I am taking on a huge challenge does not now frighten me cos I know  its the right decision. I chanted (you can meditate /pray) to make the right decision and be clear and happy that I had - as opposed to then stressing about it.
I know I have taken on a huge challenge but its fine, I accepted that when I made the decision.

    DON'T BUY STUFF (from Frugalwoods)
No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff.    Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.

Can you spend a day as though you have made the decision to give up the course and see how that feels, what comes up and then spend a day completely committed to finishing it and see what comes up?

There is no right answer in this one just what your heart and head decide I think
Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!

    Hello 🙂 thanks. I don't know yet.

I did think that I could do this term and see what the outcome of my doctorate application is but...that's a grand in fees which might be wasted.

See I am in the other camp. I assume if you finish where you are you can take a lesser qualification?

When I had a career change I finished my course where it was and took the lesser qualification. I have no regrets. In fact, I actually felt relief from losing the burden (both financial and time) from something that actually is no longer relevant to me.

I don’t feel live missed out at all and have been able to put my energy into helping myself move forward in things that are relevant to me.

You more than most will be aware that life is just too short to invest your energy in some thing your hearts not in.

If you are passionate about it and it will bring you a level of joy - do it. If not, I say knock it on the head and move on to something that will bring joy.

Thanks @twinklie. The lesser qual would mean two more terms and is a bit meaningless.
I take on board what you say about joy and passion.

As I said on my diary I’m focusing on balance this year and things that bring me joy. I’ve lost a few friends all same/similar age etc in recent times. My folks are aging faster than I would like as well (as are the kids) so I’m just wanting to reprioritise - focus on the meaningful stuff.

That’s where my heads at anyway, if that helps interpret my ramblings any better.
