Yep, I say don't even remind him next time.

I do understand. I have a hard line with this, but there are lots of things like it where I do something over and over that Mr C could do for himself, then get resentful about it. It doesn't help him in the long run, and an undercurrent of resentment just bubbles up in other things. Best all round to just say no (and I will endeavour to take my own advice 😬)

    Happy new haircut! 😊

I don't think you are being unreasonable about not buying the card. His Mum's birthday is always in April he doesn't need to wait until the last minute to buy the card. Does he use a calendar, diary or birthday book he needs to look in it and plan for events that are coming up. Even better if he uses an online calendar where he can set notifications to remind him.

He is an adult and needs to take responsibility. Sometime after MIL's birthday can you talk to him about how he is going to manage this and similar situations in the future without you reminding him.
I simply point to the calendar when my OH acts surprised about something.  It doesn't make him happy but he understands.

I second @Baileys_Babe suggestion you have a post MIL’s birthday summit about this sort of thing. I have had similar situations during our marriage and when I was still working full time and he had retired it seriously hit a boiling point. It’s always the small stuff too.

As an aside we both watched the BBC film ‘Misbehaving’ this afternoon on Netflix. If you’ve not seen it it’s about the Woman’s Liberation movement and protests at the 1970 Miss World contest. I thoroughly enjoyed the film and asked Mr SF if he did too.  He will be 79 tomorrow so a young man in that era. He said “well it didn’t really affect me all that”! I had to very calmly say “let’s just leave it at that”, exited room and felt like screaming.

I'd better get the heated propagator out then. If I do mine at the same time as you, then maybe I'll remember to shove them in the fridge!
