A cheap and easy effective device we have found is Chip0l0. We got sick of DS4 losing his housekeys/bike lock keys/wallet/ head...
It is a phone app. The 'coin' rings if you can't find X,  or I tracked DH clean across Europe when he was working in Switzerland so I knew when to pick him up from the train station. It just sits there until it is needed.
Not suggesting you should stalk him, but might be handy to suggest it sits in his kagool / thread it to his walking boot laces 🥾🥾.  Literally the size of a £1 coin.

Glad to read Mr KK has some relief.  I confess I smiled at your father once I knew he was fine. Obvs you need a plan but, well, independent of mind and all that.
Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!

Tell him you're going to get a tracker implanted if he doesn't behave himself!

Point out that it's not for him, it's for your mum, otherwise you'd let him carry on.

My mum used to worry about my dad sailing on his own, but he was usually home when he said he would be (well, back in harbour faffing about!) and always kept in touch when he was away sailing. When he was dying, she worried about something happening to him and he said 'at least I'd be doing something I loved' (and TBH it would probably have been one of the better options - thankfully his end was quite quick, calm, and as painless as we could make it), but without any way to track him it was always a worry.

Tech has moved on now - would your dad wear a watch with a data SIM that would allow you to track him (and him to make an emergency call)? There are some ideas here https://www.androidcentral.com/wearables/which-smartwatches-have-emergency-sos-fall-detection

Thanks for the suggestion @greenbee, unfortunately I doubt it. He wears a mechanical wind up watch he has been wearing since he was given it by his dad when my dad was 16.

Aw, maybe chloe knows Mr KK isn't at his best. Glad he's a little more mobile though, and cancelling MIL's visit sounds very sensible!

Chloe's doing a better job than my lot. Last time I was ill and had a day in bed, one of them brought me a dead mouse :) (I'm just glad it was dead).

As for your dad, it sounds like microchipping is the only solution ;) Sadly tracker implants don't exist yet as the tech is still too bulky. But you could threaten him with a collar and one of these: https://tractive.com/

Speaking of hill walking and potentials for getting lost....oddly on my family zoom yesterday one of my brothers was talking about a local guy who is sponsored by a outdoor gear shop so he mentions them in the books he writes.  Bro has talked to the people in the shop who despair of how little equipment the guy takes with him.  Just cheap boots, a light plastic rain poncho and regular clothing.  And this was on one of his trips from just north of Toronto all the way to James Bay and back.  About 600 miles in each direction.  And no gun (in case of bears) and no spare paddle.  AND no tracking device or GPS.  And phones wouldn't work so not worth having either.   Presumably he takes a paper map and compass.

I think the tracker - perhaps on his housekeys sounds like a good way forward.

I now use a phone app so I have peace of mind I could be found if there was a major issue. I often forget to wear my watch - especially as it needs recharging regularly. I've considered getting some of those tags for me for things I lose regularly....
