Afternoon everyone, Love this thread, I can always get lots of tips how to use up odds and ends, i’m going to delurk today, as I have a suggestion for RHemmings, if you’re happy with the saucepans you already have, you can buy a induction converter plate, it goes under the saucepan or pressure cooker, on the hotplate, it contains a magnet to spread the heat. They cost between £6 and £15 depending on the size, They are available online or stores that sell saucepans and kitchenware.
if you do decide on new saucepans take a magnet with you to check if they work on induction hob, I have some basic stainless steel saucepans from the Swedish company. congratulations on your new home.I love MSE, Thank you to all who share their journey and knowledge to reach their goals and live a good life on a small income.
2025 will be a year of necessary challenges and changes, and closing some doors permanently that don’t serve me or are not in my best interest.7 -

I love my slow cooker its just so cheap to run and helps no end when batch cooking chillis or chicken or casseroles. A piece of what we used to call 'boiling bacon ' now gammon or ham done in the slow cooker with a cup or so of full fat cola and the outside coated with honey cooked in the slow cooker then cooled once cooked give the most delicious moist sliced meat2024 Fashion on the Ration - 10/66 coupons used

I'm planning pork chops and cider in the slow cooker for later this week. The pork chops come as part of the meat pack I'm buying and I know if we put them in the freezer we will never feel like cooking them (don't know why as they're very nice slow cooked - maybe it's a childhood association). So they need to be cooked straight away.
Out of freezer today: leek, cabbage and bacon to go in a sweet potato mash; pea soup and frozen raspberries for lunch.
The rest of the tinned rhubarb and a tired apple are going into breakfast baked oats, which will use up the last of a packet of porridge oats.5 -
In: sausages
Out: 1 potion veg chilli.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

In Asda, I was relying on it saying on the packaging that it works with induction hobs.
Thank you for the congratulations on the new home. I will be happier when I've worked out how to live in the smaller space than before5 -
RHemmings, your welcome, sorry I didn’t explain the base of the saucepan needs to be magnetic, if it is it should work on induction.I love MSE, Thank you to all who share their journey and knowledge to reach their goals and live a good life on a small income.

Can I just add to @RHemmings that if you are going to keep the induction hob, a very good investment is an induction hob mat. You cut it to size to cover the whole hob, the pans heat up perfectly through it, and it makes cleaning up any spills an absolute breeze - just whip it off, scrub in the sink, and replace. Your hob never gets scratched. I got mine from Am@zon but I think Lakeland sell them too.5

RHemmings When my late husband and I moved from our much larger family home to where I live now it was probably less than half the size, and it took me a good while to get used to living in a smaller place as our previous house we had lived in for 25 years.
But my husband used to say "Think Caravan " meaning put things away as much as you can, (back then we had small grandchildren, and the eldest who is now a Dad himself and 34 this year) used to think the flap for our VHS video was a post box for small, things Jellytots and Smartiesso along with our Tv we put it high up out of his reach.
The TV we managed to hang on the wall with a shelf under it for the video. Over the years it became a bit of a family catch word when you needed to tidy up it was 'Think Caravan '
Even my grown up grandsons say itI wish you the very best in your new home and may you learn to enjoy it

While the box room is currently full of stuff, I hope to turn that into the television/gaming room with a sofa bed. That will open up space downstairs. I'm sure it's going to work out in the end.
The most tricky room will be the kitchen, but I have loads of kitchen stuff that I never use. I will have to have a cull. 'Think Caravan' will be useful. I'm working through plans for the kitchen in my head at the moment.
Getting firmly back on subject, last night I made the first 'cupboards and shed' diminishing food at the new house. Three portions of pasta for the freezer. I'll bring those in for lunch later this week. I bought some (Basmati) rice, which will go with red lentils for more lunches. Buying the rice is possibly a sign of success; I had loads of rice before and got through all of it. 'Unfortunately' I found another packet of pasta while clearing up, so I still have more pasta than I thought I did.5
