  • We usually make muffins every weekend to use up any ends of fruit. Today's are using up out of date tinned rhubarb and a slightly elderly (but ok) egg. We didn't have dairy milk and didn't want to open the oat milk, so I watered down the juice from a tin of mandarins. The mixture tasted fine but without the milk and with so much acid I'm a bit suspicious about the rise, even though I put in a touch of extra bicarb. Used up some of the neverending pearl sugar on top.

Out of freezer yesterday: filled pasta, lentil curry, burgundy beef, peas.

Just ordered £100 of meat for the freezer including lamb for Easter, so we urgently need to eat some more freezer contents before Wednesday!

Muffins fresh from the oven always taste good, @Cairnpapple! How do you think I got a reputation for being able to bake? ;)

Now I have double envy - of pearl sugar and a LeCreuset baking tray! I had to look up pearl sugar the first time you mentioned it, for some reason I'd not come across it but I realised how nice it looks on cake.

Today's dinner is going to be gammon as I picked up one at half price, with the last of a bag of potatoes, ditto carrots, and probably peas from the freezer.

We have quite a lot of frozen rhubarb, you've reminded me. I had a nice rhubarb cake recipe to use it in, but where did I put it? I will check the recipe notebook and file. I think it came from Riverford.

Turn the statement round, @RHemmings - it's a starter pack so you don't have to carry too many full packets from the shops to your new house. :) How provident of you!

I hope you're settling in okay. I've seen a few posts where you are sounding very industrious!

I finished up some cottage cheese today, which isn't very exciting, and we bought fish and chips so that made absolutely no dint in the stores apart from frozen peas to have with them. I did have another cup of my Christmas coffee though - determined to drink it all by December! :D
I think I can safely say that 'industrious' is a good description of me over the last few weeks, and into the near future.

Now I'm finding out that many of my pots and pans don't work with the induction hob at my new house. I've just found that my pressure cooker doesn't. That's going to put a dent into getting through stuff until I can replace it.

Oh, what a nuisance - I don't have any easy answers either. To replace the hob or replace the saucepans? Would it be worth getting a small freestanding hob? Cheaper than replacing all the other things, and can be packed away when not in use?

Something along these lines? As far as I can see that's not induction, but some are.

I'm going to stick with the hob. Today I have already bought a nice looking frying pan from Asda that worked fine the first time I used it. I'm looking at the pressure cookers on Argos and ... they are there. As well as elsewhere. I tried some more of my pots and overall they have all worked except for the pressure cooker and all of my frypans. Someone at a kitchen shop, where I was looking at options, recommended that I get used to the induction hob as they are good. And, having given it a few tries I can see their point.

As per another thread, my kitchen is small. I want to avoid adding things, so even though a separate electric hob would be cheaper, I'm going to go the replacement route. I'm going to put my current pressure cooker in my loft as it's a quality item and it may be useful sometime in the future.
