@Gerry1 thanks for the information will wait as per note
  • Hi, I have also received a similar message but inferring I owe Brilliant Energy money (who I haven’t been with for a few years and who went in to administration) I look at the police fraud page and also register the issue.
  • I've just had a similar message this afternoon from ABD Recovery claiming I owe Northumbria Energy money - similar situation to @RHUser in that I haven't been with them for years & they've now gone into administration. Will report like others have done.

I also had this email at the end of last week, despite having paid CSD in March 2020.
I did have a load of problems dealing with CSD but it didn't get as far as the ombudsman so I don't think that's the link. It seems the data breach can only have come from CSD, (or BSB as they now are). I have emailed BSB for an explanation but only had a 'we are looking into it' email so far.
I also looked into reporting to the ICO but their website seemed to suggest that I had to contact the offending company first. But I'm guessing you can bypass this if a couple of you have managed to report it already.....

Hi @faithhorse yes agreed to say my experience with CSD was deplorable would be a major understatement......the information certainly appears to point at the conclusion you outline.

Rather than an email asking for information that can be ignored potentially you can formalise it by making a "Subject Access Request" (SAR) where BSB must formally respond within a month, including below a link to ICO for further details on a SAR (you need to prefix https below)

  • I've also received an email from  Chloe Harrison at ABDrecovery.com  just now saying I owed money to Brilliant Energy.  We were customers but were swapped to SSE in 2019 when they went bust and all bills paid. I was relieved to find the comments here, thanks.  It is a concern that they have my details. Who should I report it to?

Hi @mazzamacc Police Action Fraud  ( www .actionfraud.police.uk ) you can either call them or use their online portal to report  (remove space between www)

Have been trying to establish the common denominator between Solarplicity and Brilliant energy. Although the administrators are different, however, the collection agent is the same CDS now BSB see extract blow from offgem

    www.ofgem.gov.uk/publications/brilliant-energy-customers-your-questions-new-supplier-sse

    Brilliant Energy administrators

Kirstie Jane Provan and Jamie Taylor of Begbies Traynor LLP and Alan Simon of AABRS Ltd were appointed as Joint Administrators of Brilliant Energy Supply Ltd on 15 March 2019. All queries should be directed to their customer collection agent CDS on 0116 296 1438 and Jacob.page@cdsolutionsglobal.com

Yes CDSolutions were the administrators (fro Northumbria Energy too) and that's who Brilliant Energy customers had to pay their final bills to.  It's a worry that the scam email quoted the right figures for the final amount oweing -  luckily I could go back into my bank account and see that this was paid in full back in 2019.  Will contact CDS to see if the data breach is from them.

TBH the focus and concern should be on the personally identifiable data that appears to be in the wild

This information is often sold on the dark web and the downstream consequential identify fraud situations

Planning to contact the ICO in the morning given the three customer databases (Solarplicity, Northumbria and Brilliant) appear to have one common denominator that being the collection agent for all three failed energy suppliers
