Laura_Elsewhere said:Sadly not... police were brilliant, though. Neighbour and I kept various relatives supplied with folding chairs, blankets and cups of tea all afternoon, but everyone has now gone, only the police still here while the flat is made secure.
You are a good neighbour @Laura_Elsewhere .

So sorry to hear about your neighbour, Laura_Elsewhere.
No sewing, knitting, mending or making done today instead it has been a baking day today and a good look in my cupboards to see what I have. I have ordered a shopping trolley to use locally, it's very hilly here and I live very near the top of one, so it doesn't take me long to walk to the local shops but it takes me an age to get back!!!! I'm hoping a shopping trolley will encourage me to not take the car to the shops, library, post office etc and get some exercise walking instead, so I hope I can save petrol coupons.
Keep safe, healthy and carry on regardless.

Sorry to hear about your neighbour, @Laura_Elsewhere. The family and the police would have been grateful for your and your neighbour's help. It's awful when things happen near to us, but it also brings out the best in people sometimes.

Sending hugs everyone, especially @Laura_Elsewhere.
@Gem-gem those pictures are just what we need, thank you.
@MrsCD, beautiful work.
I am on a Facebook group where a lady from Ukraine posted recently about how she is sewing to keep her spirits up. She has a good point: beautiful things lift our spirits. I remember reading of a lady who, when WW2 was declared, announced she was off to wash her hair. She was very right, too. Looking after ourselves and each other, keeping up morale and showing courage are all powerful things.
Be of good courage one and all. The tides still ebb and flow, the sun still shines, the rainbow is still a promise that the earth won't be flooded, the seasons still roll round and Mr Putin can't change these things.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

I've just been putting away the folding chairs I took downstairs yesterday for the relatives, and thinking how useful it is to have a Village Hall for times of sudden upset, not just for the folding chairs and cups of tea, but the comfort and company...
It was hours afterwards that I realised the three of us women had effectively been an unofficial branch of the WRVS, turning up with folding chairs, blankets and shawls, hot drinks, offers of biscuits...!2025 remaining: 37 coupons from 66:

"May there always be sunshine,
May there always be the sky
May there always be Mama
May there always be me"
I used Google translate to get the approx spelling for the Russian which I only ever learnt phoneticallky:
"Pust' vsegda budet solntsePust' vsegda budet neboPust' vsegda budet mamaPust' vsegda budu ya"
I've been humming it quietly to myself of late...
Edit: Good lord, I had no idea how apt it was! I'd never looked it up before, but apparently the chorus was written by a 4-yr-old in 1928, turned into a song in the early 60s, and sung very widely as an anti-war, pro-peace song! Lots of translated versions around, but we were definitely taught it in Russian, circa 1982...!

"In war, the lyrics say, there are no winners. For our sake, and especially for our children's sake, we must achieve peace and remove the dark clouds that now cover the sun."
