Thank you Cherryfudge for inviting my mum to the village hall. Yes, she is very special, she has a heart of gold and with her knitting and crocheting skills, to name a few of her talents, would fit right in with everyone in the village.

ChainikCrafts said:How interesting! I love the idea of you there with your knitting and your pipe!
I have a bizarre half style that I keep thinking about changing but the other options feel so awkward and painful. I hold my thumb under the right needle too. But I just can’t get the hang of tensioning the yarn with my first finger so I wrap it around my left hand and then quite often use my middle finger to flick it over the needle. And for purling I use my thumb!
I don’t think it’s good technique but it works. I’m never going to have immaculate knitting but it looks solid.
Welcome @ChainikCrafts. Please come in and take a seat by the fire. Cup of tea? Do stay and talk to us!
This talk about knitting technique fascinates me. In my original comment, I deliberately stressed that I was talking about the way English-style knitting is taught today, because I’ve met multiple older knitters who do tuck their thumbs underneath their needles, including the designer Alice Starmore, who knits colour-work two handed. On the Continental-style side, my Ukrainian knitting friend holds her yarn still in her left hand and manoeuvres her right needle around it.
(Me, I can knit Continental style without effort but find purling really awkward and wouldn’t be able to rib.)
@Gem-gem - your mum sounds lovely. Please bring her along to the village hall, next time she’s visiting.
I am really tempted to go to Unravel in Farnham next Saturday. I don’t need any more yarn; I just want to be around other knitters.

The thing that amuses me about all the different techniques is that the knitting turns out the same
Even if you knit left-handed, ie from the RH onto the LH needle, it still turns out the same...
It just goes to show that there are fewer 'rules' than many folk would have us believe about needlework...2025 remaining: 37 coupons from 66:

I've taught myself to knit two handed for colour work too. I cant say that I'm particularly speedy with it, but I find I have more of a rhythm with that way than constantly taking my hands off the needle. I was told that the main thing was to always use the same colour in the same hand, as it changes the look of the colours.Sealed Pot Challenge no 035.

Aaaaand I’m at a stopping point until I clear the entire table off. Somehow, the facing for the top edge of my apron got cut about half the length needed. I don’t have enough room to unwind the bolt again! But it is looking very cute.2023 Fashion on the Ration: Start with 66. Nightdress - 6 = 60 remaining.8

I need a new dress for a wedding I'm going to. Cannot find anything suitable in the shops - they're all floaty boho florals like Carrie Johnson likes to wear and would look ridiculous on a fairly stout 68 year old (I'm not overweight but my middle age has spread and I have NO waist but a tummy where it used to be)
I have a pattern for a nice dress which uses 2 metres of fabric plus one and a half for the lining. I make that 7 coupons, the same as a bought dress in a non woollen fabric. But I can only make a dress with a straight skirt with that yardage so if I were to make a 1940s style dress with a more A line skirt or a couple of small pleats to give walking room, it would need more fabric and cost more coupons. That seemed a bit strangeIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!5
