Nella Last (Housewife, 49) often describes making dolls from old sheets or blankets, both for gifts and to sell or raffle in the Red Cross shop she helped to run. I should think commercially produced toys were in very short supply during war years. I love the sheep @nannygladys - and the glimpse of Lady Laura!
good luck with the crochet lesson Laura, that sounds fun. Let us know how you get on.Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.6 -

I knitted this very small bear for someone a few years back and it was surprisingly quick and easy.

Ah, I hope Santa was on our side!! Of course he was!!!!
Finished the knitted 'slipover' this morning and I still have a complete ball left. I also have some more wool but not sure if there is enough for the long jumper I'd like to knit, but I do have a 100gs of a neutral shade so I thinking I may put a stripe above the rib, I'll have to have a think.
February tomorrow so l may have a walk to the cs for a gander!! Can't wait, it'll be like a day out for me (well an hour anyway).
Have a pair of socks to mend, so I'd better find my 'mushroom' out and look for suitable thread.
Oh I'll will have to wait until Wednesday until I can go to cs as it's grandma duties tomorrow:/

Hi all, no spends to declare but I have been trying to find a pattern for fingerless gloves. I have trawled back to last year and found Pip's post but it is for 4ply, I followed the link for the dk pair but I couldn't track down the book. The only book I could find seemed to have a different author so I wasn't sure if I would get the right pattern. I am going to keep looking for one as I have about 75g of wool left over from the scarves and I thought it would be enough to do matching fingerless gloves. If anyone can give me a link to a pattern it would be kind. As the wool is multicoulored I'm looking for something plainish and knitted in the round.
Take care everyone4 -
There are lots on Ravelry, @Liverpool_Anne - if you’re not already a member I highly recommend it. These are knitted in ‘sport’ which I think is DK? https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/simple-fingerless-gloves-21 lots of others on there and you can specify yarn type in the search box.Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. If you're using DK/sport, for my pattern cast on 48 stitches instead of 60. It'll work just as well. Just work fewer rows for the thumb gap. The pattern is entirely based on what I do for socks for me. I do DK socks on 48 stitches; 4-ply on 60.)

PS: Just received a sad email. The yarn shop Deramores is no more. The people who bought them, Lovecrafts, also own Webbs, in the US."Be the type of woman that when you get out of bed in the morning, the devil says 'Oh crap. She's up.'
It ain’t what you do, it’s the way that you do it - that’s what gets results!

@nannygladys, if you want to add a contrast/toning stripe across a jumper, it often looks better if you add it across the chest, just below where the sleeves attach to the body; also, several stripes often look better than one block (unless you want the "colour block" look, of course!).
Here's a search on Rav just to show some of the millions (!) of variations on stripes... https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/search#craft=knitting&photo=yes&pc=pullover&pa=stripes-colorwork&fit=adult+female+oversized&colors=2&sort=best&view=captioned_thumbs

Laura - just been over to revelry and had a look, there's some lovely ones on there and I've seen one I quite like and I think I'd be able to transfer it to my pattern, thanks again.
I've been on grandma duties today, so been busy with dgs, and as I was at dds all day I haven't had time for much other than play and cuddlesso back tomorrow.
