    What’s a “triangia” @skogar?  I’ve never heard of them.  (I have a fondue pot.)

I have a JetBoil, which can really only be used for boiling water.  I broke it out to make coffee the first morning during the big freeze in Texas last year - we didn't have power for several days: https://smile.amazon.com/Jetboil-Camping-Cooking-System-Carbon/dp/B0753NBMJ5/

As twibbledee says it's a meths burner very similar to that on a fondue pot. What twibbledee has posted is a picture of the burner which as she says can be used on their own by lightweight backpackers or wih a very small windshield. My set up is the very traditional (i.e. not at all lightweight) one as shown. they are slow to boil water but wind has little effect so works better than a fondue pot for exposed locations and looses less heat. the full set up looks something like this. On this picture the frying pan is on top. It is also the lid for the pans. I'm sure you will have seen them. Unfortunately meths prices have increased a lot so it's quite expensive to run now. I usually use a paraffin pressure stove (much cheaper than gas or meths) but not inside - it's a bit too vicious! Apologies for missing capitals. I have a sticking button on my keyboard and am getting round it with copy and paste!

the jet boils are great water boilers twibbledee. Much quicker than a trangia :-)

Cherryfudge that was an interesting article, thank you.  But on reading it, it assesses the risk of electricity power cuts as 1 in 10 not gas and there would have to be overwhelming stress on the electricity supply before the three stage gas emergency protocol is invoked.  So very unlikely though not impossible if we have another very cold winter
Thanks @maryb, I was rather tired when I read it and managed to get it the wrong way round! It's somewhat reassuring. :) Hopefully we will avoid gas cuts though having had a recent power outage in our town, I'm not optimistic about avoiding normal electrical power cuts.

@Laura_Elsewhere, I never knew that about charcoal fumes, it's a scary thought. DS who brought the BBQ to near the back door always did have a tendency to his own version of the rules!

My friend and I were out for coffee today and discovered that in place of a newspaper rack, this particular cafe had a series of magazines with excerpts from very old women's magazines, and also a handwritten recipe book from 1941! We were in stitches over some of the hats and my friend entirely failed to persuade me to knit a balaclava for DH, but I did photograph some of the recipes: a chocolate pudding including grated potato was one of them. 1941 certainly had some imaginative cooks! I also fell for a pattern for a knitted lady doll in ARP uniform in one of the magazines. Such as shame the instructions were illegible, but I do have rather a lot of projects to get through already.

    Hi All

Firstly, I've just replenished the cake tin.  We had some carrots going ropey in the fridge, so I made carrot cake last night.  It turned  out quite fudgy, so you may need to eat it with a spoon.

Second, thanks everyone for explaining about Trangia spirit burners.

@Cherryfudge, if they listed the source for the ARP doll, it may be possible to find an image online.  The National Library of Australia's Trove project is freely available and has scans of all the old newspapers and magazines published in Australia, which you can download/print to PDF.  It's a big rabbit hole to fall down - I can get lost there for hours.  (The link is to this pattern for a project I made nearly 10 years ago.)

Thanks Pip. :) I will have to go back to the cafe to check but I'm pretty sure there was a date by the article. I tried to click through to Trove but the computer is on go-slow so I'll try again later. Meanwhile I got to see your jumper, which I love. Have you worn it much? The collar detail is very 'of its time' but why on earth haven't we seen it since? It's very effective.

Thinking about the ARP warden doll Toft did a book of crochet doll figures with some mix and match outfits I’m sure a homage to the original could be knocked up from various bits and pieces in there.
You have me thinking, Floriana. I'm not sure my crochet is up to that standard yet but I could probably adapt a knitting pattern. Oh dear - what a friend used to call 'wonderful ifs'! There are so many nice things I'd like to attempt!
