Today’s quote:
“What you do today can improve all your tomorrows.”
- Well i’m still feeling like i have a bad cold and I’m dosed up with ‘paracetamol’ and ‘Vicks’. I did another lateral flow test this morning and I’m still negative, so maybe it is just an old fashioned cold (can’t remember the last time i had a cold)….i’ll keep doing tests each morning while i feel bad though.
- I went to bed at 6.30 last night and fell asleep straight away, however i woke at midnight as someone was knocking at the door……it turns out a couple of lads had tried to steel our neighbours car number plates but another one of our neighbours spotted them and disturbed them and they drove off…… the neighbour continued to watch out their window for a while and the same car came back a few minutes later and a chap jumped out and hid behind our car in our drive and started to unscrew our car number plate……it appears they were after ford fiesta number plates. Our wonderful neighbour bravely came out to them and the chap ran back to the car and they drove off. Our neighbour had already reported their attempted theft to the police so when the police turned up a few minutes later my husband had to give them details too. Our neighbour had them on their cctv and even had their number plate too, though this was probably stolen too. The police said they had put a call out so the force would look out for them……i don’t suppose we will hear anything more, but at least our plates weren’t stolen.
- Ive noticed the crime rate seems to be going up in our area…..I’m not sure if this is just our area or all over, but its quite unnerving. I had to laugh with my dh as our dog was fast asleep on the settee with my dh while the chap was next to our front door unscrewing our numberplate….she barks all day when we don’t want her to but then doesn’t bark when we want her too…she is obviously NOT a good guard dog lol.
- So this morning i got up and decided i was going to finish off working our money out. We are both really, really pleased with our savings over the last month. We managed to save £127 of our spending money this last month and obviously we don’t have to pay council tax and water this month too either….this last month we also had my husbands holiday payment come through together with the ‘first direct’ incentive payment and together with what we manage to save each month anyway, we have managed to save another £1505.35 towards our kitchen (2nd) mortgage 👏👏👏.
- We have worked out our mortgage payments still to come off before our fix rate ends in December and added the approx interest we will still have to pay. We then worked out what savings we can make each month and have worked out that on top of this we still need to find £3830.25 before mid December….which is possible if my husband gets a planned bonus / we are under budget for spending & food through the year / my dd1 pays us back £100 per month as planned for the money we lent them for their bathroom and anything else we can find to use.
Anyway, I’m going to go and have a sleep now as my head is banging again.

Moneysaving:
- Today we are having a ‘use it up’ vegetable curry….it’s all our left over cooked veg that i store in the freezer and when i have enough i make a curry. I still have some jars of korma that i got for my daughter when she went back to university in September but guess what she went off these too (as well as the pasta sauces that taste disgusting), so we will have a vegetable korma tonight. I also found some sachets of easiyo natural yoghurt mix in my pantry on sat so i made a batch up (best before date = nov 21 but I’m sure they will be fine) so we can have some of that with finely chopped onion and cucumber and i have one broken naan left in my freezer too.
Allotment:
- I haven’t been well the last few days but i felt a lot better this morning so i cycled to the allotment. There has been quite a lot of damage on the site from the winds yesterday ( it was worse here yesterday than the storm at the weekend), but luckily i had no damage….my fence fixing last week obviously helped.
- This afternoon at home i sowed some more seeds…… cabbage, currant tomatoes, kohl rabi, cauliflower, coriander, cress, gaillardia, asters and some more tegetes as the ones i sowed on the 4th feb didn’t germinate. I also ‘pricked out’ the larkspur i sowed at the beginning of feb too. The currant tomatoes need lots of time to grow even though they eventually grow outside….they are a heritage variety that i save the seed from. I always save tomato seed by scooping out the seed onto a piece of paper towel and when it’s dry i write on it and store it until needed…..this beats messing about trying to wash the pulp off in jars like the books tell you to….and I’ve never had a failure yet. You can see from the photo below that i just put the whole paper towel on compost …..i then cover it lightly with compost and then put the pot in a propagator to germinate (the paper towel just disintegrates)…..
- I also had four bug boxes that i brought home from my allotment to repair….unfortunately it was impossible to repair all four so i started to use one of them as spares. I used glue and nails to repair three of them and i will paint them tomorrow to give them a new lease of life.
Any way thats it for today.

You've inspired me @postmenopause - I've been thinking of starting some lettuce indoors (normally I just plant the seeds straight out) but I don't have any small containers. Your photo of your seeds in a margerine tub has reminded me that I have Stork in the fridge so if I finish that up I'll rinse out the tub and give it a second life!"You won't bloom until you're planted" - Graffiti spotted in Newcastle.
