In my experience, companies will usually take the Micky. I've known companies not pay the pension contributions for over 2 years, despite being reported and deducting it from the payroll. This is why I (and most other accountants I know) check whether their pension is paid on time and whether our pay has been paid correctly.
Honestly, payroll reconciliation is something I dread.6 -
@killerpeaty - it's a nightmare! I was paid pension contributions wrongly for several years (salary sacrifice) and even when they "fixed" it (I did end up with a decent extra whack in my account) I was mysteriously whacked with a correspondingly decent demand for unpaid tax a year later6

I got a letter from the pension company a few months ago saying they'd been told had left the company and my pension contributions were stopping. To be fair to HR, they fixed it the same day - but they didn't bother to tell me. I did say that I assumed that if I was leaving my boss would have mentioned it, and anyway I was on three months' notice, so they'd still be paying into my pension... apparently it was an admin error...7

Hi South Coast have just read your first post and bookmarked your diary and am along for the journey
Wow! congratulations on being mortgage free. Great plans and thank you for the detail. Are you aiming for about £200,000 to retire early? Not sure if i've properly followed your figures
And, whilst we're all different, I like to compare what's in my mind to what others are doing too. I too want to retire and do things i want to do - my aim is 10 years from now.
And wow on work - i was in a very similar situation - though sadly not well paid, one of the few not offered furlough and working impossible hours etc - i ended up leaving and being out of work - so i hear you on the JSA front too.
Looking forward to getting all caught up

Hi Stripey, thanks for your lovely message 😀
I'm aiming for an "income" from various sources of £18k pa in retirement. That's obviously in today's money and inflation will change that, but that feels like an amount I could have a comfortable life on and still be able to put some aside into savings for bigger purchases 🤞
Good luck with your plans, too!Mortgage start: £65,495 (March 2016)

So, "Exercise lots" is also ticked off the Christmas holidays to-do list. I've had 11 days off and been out 8 times (including twice when I was a bit hungover 🤦♀️😳), so I'm happy with that result 😀
Back to work tomorrow, and I can't help feeling a bit sad. While my job is fine, I just much prefer not working and have enjoyed not doing so! So, my alarm is set, my lunch is out of the freezer and there's petrol in the car. Going to spend the rest of the day chilling and then go to bed at a sensible hour so I'm raring to go 👍!Mortgage start: £65,495 (March 2016)

Also feeling a bit sad about the end of the holidays, but also slightly relieved that my diet will go back to normal!

I definitely feel you with that end-of-the-holiday sadness. I'll have to try and turn some of that 'new year, fresh start' energy into a bit of work enthusiasm, but right now I'd rather just have my free time forever.7

Yep, me too on wanting to not go to work tomorrow! I'm only in for 3 days this week, so I'm trying to hold onto that
I also love my job, and there are some interesting things happening this week, but I'd very happily give up work altogether
