I used to watch MM, Frost and Morse. Loved the young Morse series.
Just remember on the investments you still own as many individual shares etc as you did so you are well placed for when the market rises again. Like you I've had my recent investments wiped out - but holding onto that thought about individual units. It will come right again.Achieve FIRE/Mortgage Neutrality in 2030

You are doing so well and loving your new recipe challenge as well.DON'T BUY STUFF (from Frugalwoods)
No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff. Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.

I posted on Ed's diary earlier that the measures announced by the Government yesterday to help with the cost of living will be beneficial to me rather than the proverbial drop in the ocean, as my council tax and electricity bills are already quite low. I've also received a new tax coding to increase my personal allowance, which will mitigate most of the effects of the NI increase (and of course I have no debt, so interest rate increases mean nothing) - meaning my already pretty comfortable situation isn't changing any time soon. I'm not able to opt out of any of this, but it doesn't feel right receiving it when I don't need it (and I certainly don't want it going into my investment accounts), so I'm going to increase what I give to charity. This will allow me to give to the local food bank as well as the homeless charity I have been supporting.
I realise I am extremely fortunate to be able to do this, and for most people these measures will be both needed and wanted. We all need to do what's right for us in our own situations and I'd never want to make anyone feel bad about their own decisions by sharing the choices I make. I just know that this is the right thing for me in my situation, and that not doing so would make me feel bad - this is meant to be my year of happiness, after all!Mortgage start: £65,495 (March 2016)

That is wonderful, SC. I'm torn because there are people who need this help, but is basically subsidising the profits of energy companies.

I don't think anyone would take your message to say that others should do it unless they didn't know you. You don't really judge other people's spending so it would seem quite out of place now!
I haven't looked into anything so I may be completely wrong but from the info I've gleamed from the news, there's been over twenty energy companies go under. Companies generally (but not always) like to not go under I believe I heard on the radio, though again could be wrong, that ovo (maybe?!) thinks it will still make a loss even after the rises. That waffle leads me to my conclusion which is I don't think the government would be doing unless they were sure it had to happen. The guardian had an article about the acts that other nations have already put into action.6 -
Thank you both x
I'm just worried about coming across as arrogant/crass to say "I don't need it" when so many people really do. I'd much rather not have had it and to feel the pinch along with everyone else, but if I can spend it wisely I guess that's almost as good 🙁Mortgage start: £65,495 (March 2016)

SC you shouldn’t be feeling guilty for receiving money in a way that is totally out of your hands! I think what you’re doing with it is very noble, but I also don’t think anyone will think you expect them to do the same as you!Mortgage free 16/06/2023! £132,500 cleared in 11 years, 3 months and 7 days
