How mysterious about this "other thing"! I'm now imagining you going round the country buying DVDs and props of all the detective dramas and then having a room at home full of Midsomar Murders and Murder She Wrote etc memorabilia! 😂😂😂

I do like the £50 thing too and that's what I will be doing with premium bonds.
Mortgage Balance as of July 2025 £14,900.
Starting Mortgage Balance (June 2019) £72,000.
Aiming to be mortgage free by my 40th birthday, June 2026!

Guys, if "the other thing" was exciting like that I would definitely not have held off for so long before mentioning it 🤣!

I have, however, just re-named the account again to "My next £50". Even better 😀😀😀😀😀!!!

So I've been doing some sums since last week's pondering and totted up a new "money for retirement" figure, plus added Tranches 1, 2 and 3 of "the other thing", plus added the refurb budget on top (and I've increased this last one a bit, as the cost of all materials etc has gone up since I did my finger in the air estimate a few years ago). I'm quite encouraged to see I already have 23.1% of that total figure 😀!

Then I've plugged all that into a spreadsheet (I'm getting into them now 🤣!), added in my monthly savings amount and deducted the The Present things I save for every year (car maintenance, holidays etc) to see how much is going towards The Future every year and how many years I am away from hitting the total….

….So, as of the 01/05 figures, I have 13.99102995 years to go (I need to get onto my laptop to amend those decimal places - can't work out how to do it on my phone, but two is plenty 🤣!)

….This is very exciting! It doesn't look like "the other thing" will derail me as much as I had thought, and with these figures not accounting for anything like Govt bonuses on the LISA, pay rises, investment gains, my additional £50s etc, I can hopefully improve on this! (Which is good, as it doesn't allow too much for holidays) I am indeed getting FIREd up again - woohoo 😀😀😀!!!

Thanks CM, keep thinking I have worked it out wrong 🤔! However, I have faith that the spreadsheet is probably better at maths than me, so it's probably right!

All these plans sound super exciting SC, especially seeing how far away you may / could be from retirement.  I think I need to try and sit down and work that out too as I have way too many years ahead until official retirement!
