I wouldn't worry about the heating unless it electric (which I'm pretty sure yours isn't!). As for the laptop he just needs to use it on the battery and not plugged in which is what I do during these Savings Sessions. My last one I saved less than £1! Others have been better but always do the same so no idea why it varies so much. It seems that I get less and less each time!

No, not electric heating!
You only get points based on what you save over your average usage on that time/day in the past, I believe. We're pretty low users generally, so can't really save a massive amount anyway!3 -
Evening MSE chums 😊
Well, aside from the dentist trip, today has been good! 😊 Actually felt quite competent at work for the first time in a couple of weeks, so I think I must finally be getting over the tail end of that nasty flu 🙄 Got lots of things done today that I'd been putting off - inevitably they didn't take that long at all, I'd just been fretting unnecessarily 🙄
Little bit of a speedy day. I ended up in two different supermarkets, picked up some bits for the house, and a reduced present for me 😁 as well as the usual milk etc supplies, so £30 spent in total 🙄
Got home and Mr Cheery had constructed a pizza - very nice, but with 2 fillings on one side and an infection on the other, I'm afraid I had to politely decline and satisfy myself with porridge instead 🙄
So. Dentistry. I've decided what I'm doing, and need to put the plan into action tomorrow.
Left side - infection in root canal under crown that's attached to a bridge 🙄 Getting a referral to endodontist, as recommended by my actual dentist, and by my colleague who used to be a dentist. Likely will cost around £800 but they should (,fingers crossed) be able to save both the tooth and bridge.
Right side - cavity (and wobbliness) in tooth attached to bridge. Taking dentist's advice of fixing cavity, and immediately replacing bridge (which will almost certainly fall off) with small denture 🙄 Then once everything's healed and settled, we can assess and see if the tooth in front of the gap is suitable for a bridge, or whether I want a fancier (and more expensive) denture, or whether I want to stick with NHS issued one. Likely cost of NHS band 3. So £306 - although fancy denture can be up to £1k I believe, but we'll cross that bridge later 🙄
Ex-dentist colleague is NOT impressed with my previous dentist (who did all this work). He did two bridges on a single day, supposedly trying to save me money (but possibly also himself time) - one he had to do root canal treatment underneath within a few weeks, and then cancelled FIVE appointments in a row over several months, which meant everything was in quite a mess when he finally got to it. The other bridge he seems to have attached to quite a wobbly tooth, which now has a hole in 🙄
She reckons I should sue 😱 or at least complain 😬 But partly I can't be bothered, partly I HATE complaining, and partly it'll be impossible to find another dentist!! I do now have a different dentist (at the same practice) so I'll likely just see how that goes... 🙄5 -
Cheery - my dentist told me I should sue the previous dentist for the cost of gum grafts, implant removal, bone graft, and replacement implant. But I was just relieved that it was over and I was no longer in pain or having painful treatment. It cost a fortune, but it's over.4

Urgh, that all sounds grim 🙄 glad it's over. I probably would have felt the same as you in those circumstances!
Work announced voluntary severance this week. I'd get around £40k 😱 But then I wouldn't have a job... 😂 Deadline is before the interview for new job, but that's quite a risk.... Won't be taking it (despite occasional moaning I do enjoy my job very much) but that's a hefty chunk 😱2 -
Redundancy is a pain in the proverbial. It isn't so bad if it is your choice or if everyone goes, been there, but luckily I have never been in a job where they were selecting people for redundancy. That must be pretty awful & feel personal.

Oh Cheery, all that dentistry sounds awful! Hope your plan get everything sorted out and it doesn't end up costing too much.
If only the timings were different, and you had been offered the new job AND could take voluntary redundancy 😂Live the good life where you have been planted.

I think there are probably rules about taking voluntary redundancy when you've already been offered another job! But I've never actually been in any redundancy situation before so I have no idea.
My sister is trying to persuade me to just take it anyway and spend a year looking for something else. I won't be doing that - although Mr Cheery did say it was fine if I wanted to give up work altogether and we could downsize 😱 We do talk about that occasionally and one day we might do it, even without voluntary redundancy, but not now.
I'm actually in a good place career-wise at the minute and don't feel any real need to throw a spanner in the works. Another time I might have felt differently! (And I may live to regret not doing this but without a crystal ball, who knows??)5 -

£40k would be a nice base to start looking at your leisure for the next challenge..
DON'T BUY STUFF (from Frugalwoods)
No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff. Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.

I think you've definitely got to go with what feels right for you where you are now career-wise. You mostly enjoy what you do, and you have a definite plan for things you'd like to achieve in the future - and ultimately £40k is a pretty small win in comparison to what is then at stake if you find that having stepped away for a while disrupts that plan, and leaves you in a worse place. Also, I can imagine that there would be quite a bit of added stress involved in not having a job even if the payout DID give you enough to cover everything you need for a while...maybe not stress, but uncertainty, at least.
Glad you have a plan for tooth-rescue. And yes, it really does sound like your previous dentist let you down. Might be worth mentioning in passing to the new one that you were extremely unhappy that all the previous cancelled appointments left your teeth in a worse state than they would have been had things been done in a timely fashion - at least that reduces the chance of you getting passed back to the problematic one again!
Redundancy which isn't voluntary is horrible - even if it's done well, and IS a genuine process, it still leaves you feeling that you must somehow have done something wrong.🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡
