Oh scary stuff Cheery - I'm glad you're OK. What a ridiculous situation with the broadband company. I opted for live chat the other day with the pet insurance people, rather than impersonating Mr MV (in fairness it is all in his name, which is stupid as I can guarantee I'll have to be the one to deal with it), but I appreciate that you may have wanted to actually speak to someone!

Crikey Cheery that was a bit close. Although you have a lot to sort out now at least you and Mr Cheery are ok.

Thanks all. Yes, I too wonder what kind of fraud would involve me ringing up to order a new router 🙄 Ridiculous.

Anyway, some good news at least - we have sorted out the lighting and boiler. This end of the house is on a 1970s circuit board - the 5amp lighting fuse had gone and I replaced the wire yesterday, but today we found the multimeter so we could check there's a circuit, and there wasn't- it seems I'd managed to snap the wire while screwing the little screws in 🙄

New wire fitted, back into the fuse box, and we have lights! 😊

No idea what was wrong with the boiler one. I'd turned the boiler off last night so it's possible we'd just tested it with the power off  after flicking the switch to the whole board like a pair of idiots 🙄

Tested with the multimeter and it was fine, switched the boiler back on and it worked! 😃

So the hour i spent researching new(or rather quite old 😂) circuit breakers was pointless, but I do feel slightly more knowledgeable. Longer term we'll look to replace this whole board, but for now, order has been restored to the same state as it has been for the last 40 or 50 years so all fine 😂

Router should be here tomorrow, as should the thing to sort (hopefully) the hard drive, so all fingers crossed.

Someone suggested claiming on insurance, but so far we've not actually spent anything other than the hard drive thing so... 😂 The only 'damage' other than the router is that beautiful pattern down the wall (which I'll likely leave then paint over in a flurry if we ever sell the house), and Mr Cheery's laptop 🙄 My new laptop cost less than the insurance excess so not really worth claiming for that either!
