  • All ADSL providers should be able to offer the same speed.

As for a free upgrade, you are relying on someone giving up a line at an unspecified date in the future with only a guarantee on price, not timing.

With your speed needs, I would be investigating a mobile data solution.

What do you get from the MSE broadband tool?
Eg. there's a Shell ADSL deal that could get you that same 9Mbps for £15.99pm plus an automatic £40 bill credit:
Hi, yes the Shell Fast Broadband at £15.99pm plus £40 bill credit is available at my address, there is also a £60 new line installation cost..

Would this be better than a 4G/5G mobile broadband for the next 12 months?

Do you know if ADSL 10mbps can cover 2 laptops (browsing and online meetings), 2 mobile phones, streaming Netflix from my Smart TV and a PS5? Not all of these will be on at the same time of course and at best, will turn off everything bar the one I'm using at the time.

The issue with ADSL is that the maximum UPLOAD speed is 1 Mbps.

That would certainly be limiting for gaming on a PS and will cause issues in video calls and online meetings.

ZOOM recommends a minimum of 3 Mbps upload and "Googling" Video Conferencing in general says 1.5 Mbps is required.

We had ADSL until September 2020 (when we switched to VDSL) and it was quite adequate for my WFH, both kids schooling from home, Mrs QrizB's intermittent use (so 3-and-a-bit laptops) and four mobile phones.
It would also allow us to stream Amazon Prime Video and supported the kids' Xbox One.

If you have recently moved into the property , did the previous occupant have a FTTC service ?, if they did , and have not advised their own provider that they have moved out , it’s possible that the FTTC port they had will at some point become spare , if they never had FTTC or someone else on the waiting list grabbed the port when it became spare , then it’s just a case of keeping an eye on the checker and when waiting list changes to available, get an order in, ( or if taking ADSL in the short term advising the provider you want an upgrade, in case they haven’t noticed a port coming up spare ) it’s a case of first come first served when ports come up as available.
Its possible that if it’s just a case of extra cards to be added to an existing cabinet, then OR may increase capacity,  but anything more than that they are unlikely to provide it as they prioritise FTTP and money spent on FTTC is a bit of a waste of money.
As already stated , the a average speed info different providers publish is pretty pointless, the equipment used ( with FTTC ) and the line is Openreach so the speed providers will provide will be pretty much the same , and if ADSL , provided it’s ADSL2+ , then again the speed will be broadly similar as the equipment has the same technical specifications and the line is the same regardless of provider…..best to pick a provider on things other than the one with the best average speeds.
When looking at cost , best to consider all expenditure, someone who is cheaper per month but charges an install fee, may not be best value if someone is more expensive per month but doesn’t have a fee for installing the line…plus ( imho ) picking a provider just because they are the cheapest may be a false economy.

This is what I'm worried about!

This is strange because the post above seems to think ADSL will struggle massively, but it didn't for you..

They had Sky Ultrafast unlimited which seems like Fibre.. but on sky's website I can only get essential plus (ADSL) unfortunately.
  • ADSL/ADSL2+ download speeds can be up to 24, however the upload is limited to a maximum of 1.

The speed available at a property depends on the length of the line to the exchange equipment, so the download is variable according to that distance but due to the technology the upload cannot go above 1.

  • Would 4G/5G mobile broadband be faster and have better upload speeds?

Openreach will cover address it is just a time thing, they are replacing the whole copper infrastructure with fibre over the next few years, reach out to your current service provider and see if they can speed it up, or get others in the neighbourhood to fill in the availability check online or get them to write in
