Been accused of a car crash in Feb this year?
Hi all,
After some advice.
I’ve just been contacted by my insurer to say someone had lodged an at fault claim against me from Feb this year?
When I asked the details it was for an accident in Glasgow and that I pulled out of a side street into the side of another car. The extent of damage has not been given.
Now I know for sure that I’ve never been to Glasgow and have no idea where this road is. At the time of the incident I was working in West Bromwich some 285 miles and 5 hours away.
Here is the thing though…. Apparently I need to prove that it wasn’t me involved in the crash?
How do I do that then? The place I worked at the time has closed down otherwise I could have shown my clocking in/out details.
My ring door camera doesn’t go that far back?
Any ideas?

What proof does the 3rd party have that it was your car?
They may have made a mistake with the reg no, or could be a cloned car.If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales2 -
I'm assuming that they have given you an actual time of incident, if it was within working hours are there any work colleagues that can verify where you were? Question is how did they get the details of your car? Has it been cloned? As I would expect that they would have exchanged details or the other driver would involved the police. I was always under impression that you had to accept responsibility before they could continue but I may be wrong now. I can't really suggest anything other than writing to your insurance company stating it was not you. Good luck though, I'd be interested to hear how you get on.1

Hi all,
Thanks for the replies.
So far I've checked my dashcam but t doesn't go back that far.
I've checked my ring doorbell but that too doesn't go back that far.
The company I worked for at the time has now closed and is no longer contactable
No credit/debit card transactions on the day
Google location shows no information either.
All I have been given by my insurer (Hastings direct) is the fact that I've supposedly meant to have pulled from a side street into another car. My reg and make and model were given but surprisingly no detail on colour.
Also I've not been given the time, just a date.
I dont see how its fair that I have to prove I wasnt there when surely the onus is on the claimant to prove I was?

Neither do I BUT you just never know how these things can go, so best to try and find something to help your case if you can. Try and find your old boss perhaps?bikingbarney said:

Mind you I wouldn't know where I was last month let alone back in February.
Why have they taken so long to contact you?1 -
I'd assert that you've never been there and live 285 miles away so it's unlikely to have been you, then ask if they can prove you were there. That should be easier than proving you weren't.
It's most likely that someone has written the plate down incorrectly and it'll be easy enough to solve.

Thanks for all the replies so far.
Just to update… Ive been onto my insurance this morning after sending in lots of photos of my car to show the condition and also show its never been crashed.
I also catagorically denied being in any sort of accident and suggested the claim may be fraudulent.
The claimants people have laready phoned or emailed my insurance this morning trying to rush me into admitting liability.
My insurance have told them I dont accept liability and that they need to show evidence of my car being in the crash and witness statements etc.
Fingers crossed.

Surely the onus is on the claimant to prove that it was you and not on you to prove that you were not there. Proving a negative is usually problematic.bikingbarney said:

Your insurance company should continue to deny liability in the absence of any evidence otherwise.
Do you have a record of all your fuel purchases around that time? Debit or credit card statements perhaps.
That should show where and when you bought fuel that month and show that you did not buy fuel in or around the Glasgow area. A round trip of 570 miles would surely have required a fuel stop.
That isn't definitive proof but it strongly suggest your innocence.A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".6
