"Mind you, if your mother has had a few claims, even if non-fault, it might not help that much"

NO absolutely not. Please don't assume this. We know what this means and I do not even need a car to get around as my work is close by. We are using this car as a second car to get my nan to her hospital appointments. When my mum is at her work then I will take her.
I'm afraid this is still classified as "fronting".

If you will be taking your nan when your mum is at work then you are the main driver. She would clearly use her own car if she wasn't at work... You would therefore need to be the main driver.

Ultimately, you have said that you have a low income between you, and struggling to pay for things. The best thing to do is probably to sell the car as you have already said you can walk to work.

A second car with insurance, tax, MOT and petrol etc... per year for a 19 year old driver is going to cost a LOT. It would be far cheaper to just take your nan to hospital in a taxi.
That in itself isn't evidence of fronting, what if mum drove this "spare car" 95% of the time? She would be the main driver.

    Good spot.

Then yes, this could look suspicious to an insurance company. No doubt an entirely innocent act by the OP and Mum, and not intended in that way, but in effect still "fronting".
Especially if the mother's other car is insured with the same company, or they are somehow aware of its existence.  Her trying to insure a second car as 'main driver' with teenage son as a named driver, in addition to also being the main driver of the first car would surely set off alarm bells.
Why can't someone have two cars and be main driver for legitimate reasons? Is that illegal?

(reasons I have already written above)
Anyone can legally be the main driver on as many cars as they wish.

Car enthusiasts often have multiple cars and can insure themselves as the sole or main driver on all of them.

Many people have a weekday car for commuting etc and a weekend sports car for fun.

Many wealthy enthusiasts have far more than two cars.

Legality has little or no bearing on your situation. Your mother's insurance difficulties appear to be related to suspicious quotes or suspected fronting.
This is why she doesn't want to use her main one as that is used for business and commuting
Ah so she's a car enthusiast then, I hope it's not too sporty for taking nan to the orthopaedic surgeon.
Yeah imagine turning up to hospital for a chemo sess in a ferrari!!!
Dream on, so how many of these regular appointments would you have been driving to?
  • Thank you to all those who genuinely gave advice. I have given you thanks. This has now been sorted, The truth has triumphed. My mum has shown all proof of the NON FAULT claims and explained what happened.

I cannot believe some of the comments on here, people come here for advice not to be looked down on or given your personal judgement by becoming keyboard warriors. It takes  a lot of guts for coming online to ask.  It doesn't matter if English is their first language or not - I mean what the hell has that got to do with getting advice? just because you may have more knowledge on something, that does not give you the right to act all high and mighty and throw your own judgements - but hey if that has made you feel good about yourself then well done.

I am glad my mum has taught me how to sow a seed of kindness and watch the branches and roots spread and to give people the benefit of the doubt, we don't know the story behind them, we don't know how they may be trying to change, but to give one encouragement is all it could take to help them mentally. I am only 19 and I am glad i have this with me.

Don't be silly, I have just passed, are you saying I should have taken her without passing

One of the above statements is untrue....

No-one has asked the obvious question - why don't you insure the car under your name as main driver?

I think the answer to this question will answer all others....
actually someone has said this and if you had read properly, you would have read the answer

Well done in getting it sorted!
It's the nature of forums that people reach the wrong conclusions when not party to all the information and/or post their initial reactions without even thinking it through. But, as you have seen, there are those more willing to offer advice based on their own experiences and understandfing. You just have to take everything with a pinch of salt and ignore meaningful or hurtful posts.
You can report ones that are plainly insulting and unhelpful, and the moderators will remove them if they agree.

Hope you and your mum have a Merry Christmas!

Ah ok, thank you for the advice, learnt something new. Hope you have a lovely time too.

  • ...we had a spare 2nd car which me and my mum were going to get insured on....

...we are struggling so much as it is, she is a single mum and relies on her car to go to work....

...incoming is less than outgoing at the moment so in debt already....

...her as a first and me as second...

...only so I can get a rough idea how much it would cost so I can surprise her and pay towards it....

Apologies if you were upset by my (and others') reactions.

Perhaps I (we) made too many assumptions about the facts.

It might be an idea to work out how far away the hospital is, how many times you'd be driving to it (in the spare car, roughly), and then find out how much the car company charge for mileage over the specified limit.

That would be far cheaper that buying, taxing, insuring, servicing, MOTing & fueling a 2nd car.

    Thank you, much appreciated.
I won't be driving it much, it will only be the odd times the appointment falls during lunch hours. I am saving up for my own car and insurance - hopefully the new year will bring us more luck.
