Whoops, I just realised I forgot to come and report back on the system I tried last month (writing a list of items I need and then doing the actual buying once a week). I blame DD for my fuzzy brain. She’s teething and all over the place; my body does not appreciate lack of and interrupted sleep.

The system does work and I liked:
    - a list so I can almost schedule time to do purchasing rather than in little bits
    - allowed me to sleepy get the list together as I usually have to research one or more items
    - double check I do actually really need/want everything on there (I often later crossed things off).
    - weirdly made me feel I was allowed to make the purchase rather than feeling guilty if I did lots of little purchases (probably because I know I thoroughly vetted each purchase first).

     Things that didn’t work:
    - buying on the same time every week didn’t work for me because it’s not always when I have the most time and sometimes you need to purchase on a certain day for whatever reason.
    - it felt too regimented/rule based and I have so little time that I like to just get on and get it done wherever I have time/feel like it.

So now I am still using lists and when I have a reasonable amount on there and feel moved enough or something becomes more urgent I get on and order my list (deferring anything I’m not sure about of course). Weirdly I am currently ordering less than once a week at the moment!

Today I ordered birthday/new baby cards, badges, presents and birthday cake candles to nicely use up my gift voucher (and a bit more) as I had enough for free postage. Feel super organised now as that’s most of Jan and Feb taken care of!

Just stalking many second hand books on the bay of e now, but it is an enjoyable pastime for me and I have over a month to find the books on the list for presents at a suitable low cost. Hopefully all the prices will drop post Xmas too.
QueenJess, this sounds super-organised! I agree with buying at the same time every week, in fact I haven't done that, think you are right that it would feel very restricted. My own lists are much more loosely organised than that and I tend to keep them on wishlists online or just in my head and I basically just hold off from buying them until a day when I have to spend for some other reason. There probably aren't that many things that I have to buy urgently so this more or less works for me. It has the added advantage as you say that if purchases get put off sometimes it becomes apparent that they aren't really needed. I love buying books too but they stay on my wishlist, sometimes for months, which is fine. If I still want something after several months then I know that I really want it! :) x

It will be an NSD for me today too, wasn't meant to be because I had a dentist appointment but she cancelled due to ill health (not Covid). That was fine by me because it doesn't feel that safe out there at the moment and I was happy to stay home where it is warm and cosy.
  • Unexpected NSD today, which means spending will be tomorrow instead
