I was going to order from 7dayshop as its so much cheaper than Crucial. I'm not so sure now you've said yours didnt work. I was thinking of getting this 2gb stick:
    http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_11&products_id=103275

Its got exactly the same spec as the Crucial stuff (number of pins) etc, so I can't see why it wouldn't work but as I say you're experience has worried me!

To be honest I don't know what was wrong, it just wouldn't work despite trying in both the slots and with and without my original memory. When I realised something was wrong I Googled Acer and found a website that suggested using a cheaper product may not work. Now this may just be Acer, I don't know. As in fact Crucial isn't a great deal more expensive I decided to order from them. The 7dayshop memory was £11 and Crucial £16 so sometimes it doesn't pay to buy cheap :)

oh and as its quite likely it was my own fault, I didn't count any pins :(

    Hi,
I am just about to order some 'memory' from crucial but, before I do I wonder if anyone can answer a couple of questions for me?

I have 256mb currently installed and the options Crucial have given me are...

Another 256mb, equalling 512mb...£12.91 inc vat

    A 512mb = 768mb...£21.14

    Or 2 x 512mb= 1gb..£42.28

If I chose the 1gb options I would need to take out existing mb to free a slot. So what will I lose on PC by doing this :o

    I have a Sony Viao PCV-RX301

I have looked to see if I would be capable of changing these myself and, I found that to get to the slots I have to wade pass/through some wide pliable ribbon type components, is this normal?

I was only able to take one side of the tower, is this right?

    Thanks for any advice.

you won't lose anthing by taking out the existing ram

you sometimes need to unplug the ribbon cables to the keyboard/screen to fit the ram but it's easy enough to do

I'd go with the crucial memory to save any problems, it is worth the few extra pounds

earth yourself, I touch a metal radiator or heating pipe

means you will not "zap" the memory with static electricity

Static and memory don't mix, so it's a case of making sure any static on you/your clothing has discharged.
    Move along, nothing to see.
