Laptop needs more memory

Hi All

Hope someone can help with this!

Our laptop is desperately in need of some more memory. My brother (who is reasonably skilled in IT) advised that I find out the spec of the laptop and then price up some new memory.

Anyone know an easy way to do this so that I get the right sort? Also any advice about how much to buy, potential suppliers, cost and how to fit it when I have got it, will be very much appreciated!

I am not a complete IT dunce, so it doesn't necessarily have to be in words of one syllable!!!!

PCwizard will tell you what you have fitted and how many slots you have etc. you can then Google for the best deal.

www.crucial.com have a scanner that will scan your laptop and tell you what you're options are. Or just select your laptop from the drop down list if it is there.

Then either buy from them or google for the best price. I've always found Crucial reasonable though and free postage.

    Hi All

Thanks very much for all your help.

I couldn't get PCWizard to work - probably not enough memory to run it.

I did the Crucial scanner thing and the results were rather contradictory so I'm confused now! I tried to copy and paste it across but it wouldn't work so I'm having to type it(I won't include absolutely everything!):

Guaranteed compatible memory upgrades for your: Easy Note F5287 Laptop/Notebook

    Memory Upgrades
According to our scan your system already has the maximum amount of memory of installed

Your Crucial Scanner Results Packard Bell spec for spec_mem_titan specifications

    Currently Installed Memory: 256MB
Each memory slot can hold DDR PC2700 with a maximum of 1GB per slot*

    * Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory

    Maximum Memory Capacity: 512MB
    Currently Installed Memory: 256MB
    Available Memory Slots: 0
    Number of Banks: 1
    Dual Channel Support: No
    CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel
    CPU Family: Intel(R)Celeron(R)CPU 2.80GHz Model 2, Stepping 9
    CPU Speed: 2793 MHz

Then there were some questions and answers - admittedly I didn't look at all of them. I shall go back again shortly to have another look.

Then suggested memory upgrades: 1GB, 512MB and 256MB

O.K. so my questions are this:
    • If my maximum memory capacity is 512MB and my installed memory is 256MB how much do I buy? 256MB or 512MB?
    • (related to the above question) Does the upgrade add to the existing memory or replace it?
    • Why are they suggesting 1GB when the maximum is 512MB?
    • Why do they initially say that I have the maximum memory installed when it then contradicts this by saying the maximum is 512MB and I currently have installed 256MB?
    • Why does it say that each memory slot holds so much and then it tells me I have no memory slots? Where does my memory go then?
    • What on earth do I buy?
    • How do I install it? Where does it go?
    Any help gratefully received!

I'd been meaning to get some more laptop memory for ages and this thread gave me the prod.
I added 512 to my existing 256 and it's flying now. Completely transformed.
£23 from crucial though I could have shopped around. Delivered next day but one which is pretty good at this time of year. 2 minute trouble free installation.
    Cheers all!

I have got my Packard Bell booklet but I am sure there should be another more specific, more detailed manual and disc but I can't find either! I think I have to contact Packard Bell.

Incidentally I was discussing this at a family do recently and a family member recommended doing a factory reset (or whatever it was called) but this seems a little drastic to me!

    I don't trust Crucial.

    I think it's 2 x 512MB. Here 16.02 including delivery.
