EV, Hybrid or ICE?

I own a tesla model 3 long range which is the best car I've ever owned. I wouldn't have considered electric if I couldn't have a home charge point. Whilst the public chargers are great if you're using them occasionally to drive long journeys, to have to use them constantly to charge up would be a massive pita.
God knows how to we're going full eV in this country with the charging structure we have. Gunna needs massive investment1 -

That said the Tesla Model 3 long range is less expensive that the Volvo! If I had my own garage with my own charging point this would be a much easier decision. However, that is likely to be a few years away as my plan is build my own house. Maybe in the case the cheap ICE is the way to go so I can get my house built faster. The only thing about a cheap ICE is that I am so used to driving automatic cars with 4-wheel or AWD and an electric parking break. I'm sure I'll remember how to drive a manual....it's like riding a bike.0 -
Might be worth reading this article in the Spectator (if you can get access)

To be absolutely honest, if looking for a cheap car, it's probably better to look for a manual, assuming that you don't actually need it to be automatic. Traditional torque converter autos, whilst reliable, are inefficient and tend to be a bit rubbish on small engines. Dual clutch transmissions and automated manuals are notorious for going wrong and being fragile. The worst thing that can happen to a proper manual, by and large, is the clutch wearing out and that's a fairly cheap and easy fix in most cases.Pixie5740 said:pcgtron said:I own a tesla model 3 long range which is the best car I've ever owned. They said that about ICE as well. As the cars appear, the infrastucture will keep up. At some point, EV charging will move from "nice to have" to "must have" for any business with car parking.

My 3 LR is due in a couple of months. To be honest the main attractions for me are 1. huge company car tax benefits and 2. doing 90%+ of my charging for free at work.pcgtron said:I own a tesla model 3 long range which is the best car I've ever owned. I have an existing 3kw charger at home, permanently fixed and currently used for my 3 series hybrid. I may not even bother upgrading the home charger for the Tesla, we'll see.
Without the tax benefits, or the fact that someone else pays for the car, there is no way I would have considered EV.“Like a bunch of cod fishermen after all the cod’s been overfished, they don’t catch a lot of cod, but they keep on fishing in the same waters. That’s what’s happened to all these value investors. Maybe they should move to where the fish are.” Charlie Munger, vice chairman, Berkshire Hathaway0
