Thanks for your help.If it really was not visible then I would have been 99% happy. I respect Julie's expertise and she said instantly needs replacing.
I don't think I will have a problem with the shop owner

I have just written a very lengthy post on the outcome which is very favourable.
I touched something and it has disappeared . The delay in posting was that I have not been very well..it's now 12 45 am so I will post it tomorrow.
I think there will be a lot of interest in the outcome. I am MAD with myself in losing my post
Thanks Sue1 -
Build the tension, why don't you...!I hope you're feeling better.

Hello
Finally I am hoping that this time my post will be successful.for the for the 4th attempt
We left this where the shop owner was coming to see me a week past on Friday/ Forgive me if I don't check out the date. As I said not very well at the moment.
When the shop owner said right away I put my hands up this is entirely my fault. He said he should have come out and measured the room again when I chose to order Ulster carpet it is a woven carpet and not tufted which will have a bit of stretch with it.
He then told me that I had asked about Scotchgard and he suggested that it be done be in their premises as it takes time to dry and the furniture would not be able to placed back until it dried. He had measured the carpet and it was 3.99M At that it would have fitted but it lost 2 cms and again he said this is entirely my fault. Had he measured it would have needed 5 M.
He inspected the carpet and proposed 2 option
1 being that he replaced the carpet but 5M width I would need 9 meters of carpet at £54 M
2 That I gave them the chance to redo the very small area that is actually visible
The room is a lounge/dining room. A TV unit then a medium size sofa, a small space, a sideboard, a space of 2 -3 feet, and then a storage heater.
He proposed sending a fitter who has worked with him for 34 years. He then said if I was happy he would give me the carpet for free. I was still not happy he would give me a new carpet.
He said his reputation was very important and that every customer is happy. I had nothing to lose so agreed to have another go at the join . This was an incredible offer and I did feel a bit guilty the join was repeated and while is not 100% perfect you would have to look very carefully to see it.
My daughter wanted me to be absolutely sure I was 100% happy Cost of the carpet is £3800 which included hall carpet underlay fitting underlay etc. He said I should pay £2000.
He is an honorable man a family business of 3 generations. I think you will be as surpised as I am I am using a laptop where T is sticking . I am not very well and my spelling leaves a lott to be desirred but having lost 3 previous attempts I dont want to risk losing i again .
Sorry about this and I awaitt your responses.

Well done! That's the big advantage of dealing with local companies who have a reputation they value.

Thank you. I knew absolutely nothing about this small business.Had called another family business who.told me they no longer sold carpets but recommended this business
When he came to measure up I liked him. There is another story behind this..
This was an insurance claim on my contents policy so wanted to obtain 2 quotes.I live in a retirement property. It is leasehold property therefore the buildings insurance is with the freeholder.
Here lies another tale which I have been told is a first.
All I can say at this time is that I should probably start a new a new post on the home insurance forum.
Incidentally.he told me how much he made per M. I was shocked at how little the margins are.
He sells carpets to order and therefore he does not sell any roll ends etc.
Our family are very much wanting to buy local
I have just bought 2 sofas and a chair which were expensive. This another family owned business a bigger company. Also we are concerned about the environment.
It somehow seemed wrong to be
demanding a brand new carpet
The shop owners parting words to me were thank you for being so nice to me. It's says something of the integrity of this man.

I am incredibly tired and unwell at the moment.
I had spilled bleach accidentally on cloakroom toilet and hall. Running as I thought it was from the bottom which had been pierced when it fell off the top of the cistern.
As you will know carpets will only be replaced to where the bar divider between rooms. The hall is adjacent to lounge dining room. My daughter has got a law degree but works in claims for insurance claims. Due to as she said sloppy wording they had failed to exclude carpets in the home contents insured policy.
It was excluded in home and contents policy.
As I say it's a long story suffice to say she is a very useful person to have around. The bottom line is that the Ombudsman found in our favourSue1
