If there was a problem with the fabric there would have been many items shrunk after their first wash.  Try googling to see or try the company’s Facebook page, if nothing then it does suggest the error is not with the fabric.
  • My washing machine is new,
how can I prove I washed it correctly
I have asked to see a copy of the report from Balmain

what would be my next move
    thanks in advance
  • I have asked for proof of the report they supposedly got from Balmain - I just can't see how u can do a report on a picture?

A report doesn't have to be an exhaustive process taking all day.

How can you prove you washed it correctly? I think that's probably impossible.  Was there anything else in the wash with the item that is made of the same material that didn't shrink?
  • They only sent them pictures of item

Item was washed by itself on a delicate wash of 20 degrees I know i washed it correctly
Would it be possible, and where would i be able to get someone independently to look at it

If they reject your refund request, they should return the item to you.  But where you'd go to find someone to look into it I wouldn't know.  Nor can I think what they'd be able to do to support your case - certainly without it being time consuming  (and thus expensive).  Look at the materials the item label says it's made of and decide whether or not you'd expect those to survive the specified wash cycle?  Examine the material to see if it is actually made of the specified materials?  Buy another item the same and test it?

The problem is that it quite likely they'll just say:  Yeah, based on what it says it's made of it shouldn't have shrunk at 20C and then you're back to:  How do you prove you washed it at 20C ?

Which... you probably can't.  So you really need to consider if, even if you could find someone who could look into it, would it be worth the expense seeing as you're not going to be able to *prove* the fundamental issue of washing temperature.

Theoretically, it might be easier to test if your washing machine actually runs at 20C when it's set at 20C.  Though that would probably involve buying some kind of waterproof logging thermometer which wouldn't be cheap and nobody would pay you back for that.

Or you take your chances and issue a small claims court proceedings via MoneyClaimOnline in the hope that they offer an out of court settlement without evidence being provided because legal costs for small claims arent recoverable and so win or lose their bill may be larger than just paying you out.
  • I have asked for a copy of the report they got from Balmain, I have also asked them to provide the name of there supplier, and email telephone number for them to contact direct, they have not replied to my emails or what's app messages

This makes me think they have not even asked, they are just saying this and refusing,
I am going to send a letter before claim, and  I will persue this in the small claims court as the top was £450 and washed correctly
Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks in advance

That £450 Balmain sweatshirt is 100% cotton.
Pure cotton shrinks. That's what it does.
Cotton blends were invented to solve this problem.
A good manufacturer will pre-wash the pure cotton fabric or the finished garment before releasing it. This deals with most of the shrinkage but further shrinkage can happen especially with incorrect washing.
I am sure that Balmain will have told Zap that the garment was pre-shrunk and therefore further significant shrinkage is due to incorrect washing. They probably have test data.
You can pay for further testing but that will only show that the fabric has shrunk, not when, which will support Balmain's claim.
People who prefer pure cotton often buy the next size up and wash before wear.
The only good news I can suggest for the OP is that pure cotton can with care be restored to its original shape
