    58 in a 60?
Single carriageway, national speed limit. 60 for cars, 50 for GVs.
    So 58 in a 50, then.

I once sat as an observer on a speed awareness course and there was a session on speed limits. It was very evident that a large number of those present were not aware of the speed limits that applied on different types of roads or to  different types of vehicles. The most usual area of ignorance was as above, street lighting denoting a 30mph limit, and, most surprisingly, a widespread belief that dual carriageways have a default minimum limit of 40mph.

That's what happens when previous driver education is taken in social situations like the pub.

I know someone who got caught doing 69 in a 70 in a car.

The driver was done for dangerous driving and they were both done for outraging public decency.
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".
  • There have been many posters on Pepipoo claiming to have caught below the 10%+2 threshold, but to date not one of those ever resulted in a positive confirmation. I've also seen claims that North Wales was going to start prosecutions at anything over the speed limit (i.e. 31 in a 30), but again nothing has ever shown up to confirm this on Pepipoo.
Their speedo could well have been telling them they were within 0%+2 of the speed limit but that doesn't necessarily mean they were. The reason the tolerance exists in the first place is because car speedos aren't 100% accurate.

What TB is saying is that there are reports of getting NIPs for speeds of lower than 110%+2mph, but this has never been corroborated by evidence even when the poster that alleges this is asked.

There are people in my town who will go blue in the face telling you that a local dual carriageway isn't a dual carriageway because it isn't national speed limit. It's a strange one.
    A witty saying proves nothing

A speedo can only overread i.e. report a speed that's higher than reality. By law it must not show the vehicle going slower than its actual speed. The guidelines of 10% +2 exist to allow for that variability, which can come from e.g. worn tyres.

    Actual Speed = 30 Indicated Speed = 32: Good
    Actual Speed = 32 Indicated Speed = 30: Bad
  • pepipoo would be very interested as they have seen evidence of this...

They would. However, not because they have seen evidence of it but precisely the opposite - they haven't. I've heard many reports of people seeing action for speeds below the NPCC's guidance threshold - especially in 30mph limits. I've never actually seen anybody post their NIP, though.
This guy reckons his wife is being done for 34 in a 30.  Unfortunately he didn't have the foresight to keep a copy of the NIP...

nip and some dodgy behaviour from police. Opinions needed please. - Speeding and Motoring Offences - Consumer Action Group

(Mind you, his whole attitude seems a little - shall we say - confrontational... )
  • I believe he has subsequently accepted that he was wrong and it is an allegation of 35 in a 30.

My Speedo read’s  75 mph and sat nav 72 mph.
At most speeds your car will show about 3 mph more than you are doing.
    So you should be fine.
As long as the OP wasn't going faster than 78 before they saw the van.  The van often sees the speeder well before the speeder sees the van.
Definitely wasn’t going any faster than 78, as when my car has been pass such speed, it shakes, and I don’t like it. So I tend to go no faster than 75mph (still quick, I know but mindful not to drive over such speeds).
