There are a few things to do - draw up a monthly or weekly budget.
Use your student finance as a regular income (ie £x amount of maintenance grant/loan divided by 52 weeks).
Give yourself a weekly income from the previous amount.
Top it up with a part time job. (divide this income as above - ie paid fortnightly - split it in half to run on a regular weekly budget)
Do not use your overdraft unless absolutely necessary.
Use a different current account for your daily living to your student finance. This keeps it separate so you can have a S/O set up for the weekly allowance.

If you prefer monthly, you can do it that way too.

When my DS went to Uni, he did the above and came out the other end with no overdraft to pay back but this was always there if needed such as weeks when he was paid his weekly allowance before the student loan was processed by a few days.
He did a weekly budget as we decided that when first budgeting, if you mess up and spend everything on day 1 then the maximum amount of time you go without any money is 6 days.

Don't buckle to peer pressure - it's easy to do what everyone else does.

    All the best.
