You still have £140 you wouldn't otherwise have had,basically is what it boils down to,something to appreciate rather than complain about,maybe.
Moving forward,next year it might be advisable to contact whoever your energy supplier is and request well beforehand that the money is used to pay towards whatever your preference is at that point,uncertain if you can or can't do that,others will be able to advise.
Irrespective of what it's called,or what you'd prefer it to be called,it is what it is.

I can see how this system isn't working for you.
Credit on your electric meter is stuck there, while you have to keep feeding your gas meter, so it's not helping with your immediate need for gas credit, and therefore heat.
You'll get the benefit of the "money" eventually, as your electric will last longer...but that's not where and when you need it!!
Not sure there's anything you can do though, sadly.
