Manxman_in_exile said:Please forgive me for asking a really really stupid question (I'm quite old fashioned and a bit of a luddite) but what exactly is the point of keyless entry and/or start systems?
My key fob sits in my pocket. Only comes out when washing/changing trousers.
So no worn pockets taking keys in and out of pocket.
Can simply walk up to car, press button on door to unlock. Sit in seat press start button & off we go. No fumbling around messing with keys
Mine will not start car unless keys are in car, even with door open.
Would never go back to a car that does not have this system...
Just like @BOWFER if someone wants to steal the car I would rather it be by relay attack than house being broken into & keys taken given where they are kept.Life in the slow lane0 -

If they want your car and can't do 'whatever they do' to clone the key remotely and quietly drive off while you sleep, are they just going to move on?
Maybe with a nod of their hat towards your house and a mumbled "fair play guvnor, you got us there"
Or are they going to break into your house to try and find the keys?
Plenty of evidence of the latter.
Leave the keys under a pot then.
I'm not going to overly protect a piece of tin that's easily replaced and/or have my house/family compromised because of some daft overly protective notion.
Any undesirable coming into my house at any time and I'm there is gonna regret it big time1 -
They can't get in the car without pushing a button, what's the problem?Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0

And either of them will happily let a person drive away leaving the key behind, until you run out of fuel.
You'll get warnings, of course,
The mechanic dropped the car at the front door, running.
So my wife jumped in and drove off, she then got the 'key out of range' warning after a mile or so.
So she turned back, only to find the mechanix was out on a breakdown with our key in his pocket and she had to wait over an hour....0 -
For all it's alleged failings in terms of security, I wouldn't want to go back to a car without keyless entry.
This having to fumble for keys and pressing a button is so old.

My car will not start unless key is in the car, also key transmitter goes to sleep after 40 sec of inactivity.Moneysaver0

This having to fumble for keys and pressing a button is so old.I think the failings in security are more than just "alleged". People are actually stealing cars using a relay attack. It's one of those stupid technologies that should have been rejected as soon as someone suggested it.If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.1 -
Thanks to all your comments and replies. This question has sure blown up! I can't reply to you all but I've gotten some good ideas so thanks0

Going back to the original question. Ive had my keys in a faraday pouch for over 4 years until a few months ago I opened the car then discovered the keys were still in the pouch in my pocket.I’ve since bought new pouches , and tested they work! Why it stopped working I don’t know but as others have said the keys had been in and out of the pouch a lot over the years .0
