If they want your car and can't do 'whatever they do' to clone the key remotely and quietly drive off while you sleep, are they just going to move on?
Maybe with a nod of their hat towards your house and a mumbled "fair play guvnor, you got us there"
Or are they going to break into your house to try and find the keys?
Plenty of evidence of the latter.
Leave the keys under a pot then.
I'm not going to overly protect a piece of tin that's easily replaced and/or have my house/family compromised because of some daft overly protective notion.0 -

Seems very naive to me, if they've gone to the bother of singling out your car I'm more inclined to think they're NOT leaving without it.0 -
I thought the majority of new cars required the card to be inside the car to start .

I don't see how it would know whether you were physically 'inside the car or not.0 -

These systems are sold as keyless entry, not keyless start.0 -
Keyless Entry systems require the key to be within a certain distance of the car.
Keyless Start systems vary ... the Volvo V60 I have on order states that the key must be within a certain area of the car, either within the passenger compartment or (for some versions) within the area of the front seats.Jenni x0 -

Our Evoque is keyless start (still need to press the key fob to lock/unlock)
Still pretty sure either of them will start when the key is 'close' to the car rather than inside the car.
Like I said, I don't know how the car would know it was inside the car, unless it needed to feel weight on the driver seat or something.
And either of them will happily let a person drive away leaving the key behind, until you run out of fuel.
You'll get warnings, of course, but a thief could theoretically drive hundreds of miles without any problem.0 -
Directional antennas ... I'm sure that's how Volvo (for example) determine where the key is physically inside the car (and how they know where in the car it is ... as I said some versions require it to be in the front part of the passenger compartment).

Please forgive me for asking a really really stupid question (I'm quite old fashioned and a bit of a luddite) but what exactly is the point of keyless entry and/or start systems?
I can see it must have been a great selling point for whichever manufacturer first came up with it and that it would have been very popular with young - and not so young - executives wanting to show how tech-savvy they were and that they had the latest toy to play with, but what actually is the point?
It just sems to me to be a needless technological solution to a problem that has never really existed. Especially if it assists ne'er-do-wells to steal your car more easily by "nicking" your keyless radio waves, or allows this:BOWFER said:motorguy said:JJ_Egan said:I thought the majority of new cars required the card to be inside the car to start .
