I don't get this desire to overly protect the keys.
If they want your car and can't do 'whatever they do' to clone the key remotely and quietly drive off while you sleep, are they just going to move on?
Maybe with a nod of their hat towards your house and a mumbled "fair play guvnor, you got us there"
Or are they going to break into your house to try and find the keys?
Plenty of evidence of the latter.

Because it's mine and why should I pander to the tea leaves?

Leave the keys under a pot then.
No, I'll just do 'enough' to make sure I get paid out in the event of theft.
I'm not going to overly protect a piece of tin that's easily replaced and/or have my house/family compromised because of some daft overly protective notion.

I think most of the time it's fairly opportunistic - if they can't get the car to start they'll move on and look for an easier one unless it's particularly rare.
This is clearly what those using faraday pouches/tins/hiding keys hope.
Seems very naive to me, if they've gone to the bother of singling out your car I'm more inclined to think they're NOT leaving without it.

I thought the majority of new cars required the card to be inside the car to start .

I'm pretty sure both our keyless start cars (Leaf and Evoque) can be started provided the key is within a certain distance of the car.
I don't see how it would know whether you were physically 'inside  the car or not.

Our cars allow you just to touch the door handles to unlock the car so they must work with the key being within a certain distance of the car.

These systems are sold as keyless entry, not keyless start.

Keyless Start systems vary ... the Volvo V60 I have on order states that the key must be within a certain area of the car, either within the passenger compartment or (for some versions) within the area of the front seats.

Our Leaf is keyless entry (keys never come out of pocket to unlock/start/lock)
Our Evoque is keyless start (still need to press the key fob to lock/unlock)
Still pretty sure either of them will start when the key is 'close' to the car rather than inside the car.
Like I said, I don't know how the car would know it was inside the car, unless it needed to feel weight on the driver seat or something.
And either of them will happily let a person drive away leaving the key behind, until you run out of fuel.
You'll get warnings, of course, but a thief could theoretically drive hundreds of miles without any problem.

Directional antennas ... I'm sure that's how Volvo (for example) determine where the key is physically inside the car (and how they know where in the car it is ... as I said some versions require it to be in the front part of the passenger compartment).

I know someone who did that ........ in a hearse .......... complete with "passenger" in the back.  Luckily they managed to get someone else to nip the keys over to them about 5 miles from the funeral home without the boss knowing !
