Firstly, for anyone that does not read the story, and just reacts to the headline, a couple of extracts:

Rationing of energy in Europe cannot be ruled out

So while the UK would not be as badly hit by supply disruption as the EU, it would be affected by prices rising in the global markets as demand increases

The potential plus of this type of headline though, could be to focus attention of the large proportion of users that are concerned about costs, but are not making real efforts to reduce usage.

I think I missed the 'street protests', too.
  • It seems fairly likely that Nord Stream 1 will be off for good or resume later than anticipated at a reduced flow. What are these cap predictions based on? There seems too many  variables for them to be meaningful unless they have factored in these probabilities?

Essentially I think energy companies agree to buy energy in advance and the cap is based on the corresponding agreed future prices. Current market instability makes these future prices high.

The concern I think is not so much about price but what happens if demand outstrips supply.
