There's a lively discussion at the OVO forum, where initial acerbic knee-jerk reactions were eventually toned down a bit as people did their sums. The universal 7p unit rate may not have been sustainable, although I don't think there would have been a lot of 'having to buy at peak rates'. The whole point of it was to schedule charging for 'greener' periods, when they should have been able to spot-buy at more favourable rates. The change was not particularly well introduced, as that discussion and others nearby show.MattMattMattUK said:Ovo pricing change could double charging costs for some EV ownersThe people commenting ...I'm not being lazy ...

Energy bills likely to rise by 20% in next four years, says Britain’s biggest supplier
Britain’s biggest energy supplier has told MPs that bills are on track to climb by a fifth in the next four years, even if wholesale markets plummet, because of the rising cost of government policies.
An executive at Octopus Energy said household energy bills were likely to rise by 20% unless the government took radical action to address the burden of increasing “non-commodity costs”, even in a scenario where wholesale electricity prices fell by half.

I think we will all face the consequences if more and more people are unable to pay their utility bills.MattMattMattUK said:

Energy standing charge plans could backfire, MPs told
Energy bosses have given a cool reception to regulator Ofgem's plan to overhaul standing charges.
Some called for the abolition of standing charges, while others say the proposals would make the issue worse for customers.
Many called for a social tariff, in which those who are on low incomes receive a discount which is likely to be paid for by other billpayers
Policy costs are effectively government taxes used to fund environmental and social schemes, such as subsidies for renewables. These costs made up about 16% of an electricity bill and 6% of a gas bill last year, according to research by the charity Nesta.
One option - backed by Energy UK - is shifting policy costs from electricity bills to gas.
At the committee, Chris O'Shea, chief executive of Centrica, said this would be a subsidy from the poor to the rich.Energy standing charge plans could backfire, MPs told - BBC News

If things are that tough then you need to urgently get yourself over to the DFW board (no - we don’t just deal with people “indent” - we’re quite happy to assist people who are struggling and trying to avoid that situation too!). Prep your Statement of Affairs beforehand and op that into your opening posts and we can take a look and see if there is any budget tightening options you have missed - never impossible.wrf12345 said:Already defaulted on the water due to crazy rise in s/c, looks like I will be doing same with gas and electric if prices go any higher... had enough!Either way, you need to ensure that your priority bills are addressed and in real terms that includes water, and at least a basic level of heat and light (and energy for cooking). Also rent or mortgage, council tax, and necessary insurances fall into that category.
if you are just failing to pay because you have literally “had enough” even though you can afford it, and are doing this as some form of protest, then you’re playing a dangerous game, and should probably reconsider.🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡

One from the BBC:Netherlands' renewables drive putting pressure on its power gridIn a Dutch government TV campaign called "Flip the Switch" an actress warns viewers about their electricity usage."When we all use electricity at the same time, our power grid gets overloaded," she says. "This can cause malfunctions. So, use as little electricity as possible between four and nine."It is the sign that, in one of the most-advanced economies in the world, something has gone wrong with the country's power supply.(Quote formatting doesn't want to work for me, for some reason.)More at the link.N. The total cost at cap level of debt provision is already £50 - as of April iirc cap letter - when grouped and then hid likes of tge £28 on DD cap additional allowance debt special (supposedl6 temporary remember) in the with operational costs etc and debt by Ofgems 90 day arrears or in debt plan metrics is up since that figure announced from iirc c£4.15 bn to £4.4 bn before another round of larger winter bills.MattMattMattUK said:

Future baked in rise likely to be made far worse by this and continuation of previous govts policies adding £51 to regional average cap - up £35 despite a £15 ex vat reduction in wholesale energy costs.
More defaulting is not in any ones interest.
And for many groups there appears little consequence of their non payment actions.
We are even now compensating those targetted for prepay fitment.
Given the moral outcry of the liberal / left / virtue signalling righteous that have inevitably worsened the debt crisis. On prepay meter enforcement on top of longer term govt policy on no cut offs for certain groups in winter and even year around.
How many other suppliers are essentially told to provide their goods for free without realistic measures to prevent people taking with no ability or worse potentially in some cases simply no intention to pay.

Exactly what I have been attacked for pointing out in many posts.The_Green_Hornet said:Energy bills likely to rise by 20% in next four years, says Britain’s biggest supplier

Policy and net zero costs are out of control in the UK.
£8bn in balancing costs - over £250 if wax ever to be split equally over c31m donestic and business suppliedby grid - is not some fanciful scare story - its an official now govt quango NESO estimate.
