I'm a member of the Kirk Hill cooperative. It's all a bit complicated :) but essentially Ripple are (or possibly were) contracted by the cooperative to manage the wind farm for us. Ripple going bust is awkward in the short term and we need to find a new management company, but in the longer term it shouldn't be a big issue.

"Households with broken smart meters will automatically receive £40 compensation from their energy provider if it is not fixed within 90 days, under new proposals from the regulator Ofgem. They will also receive a payout if a smart meter installation fails due to a fault within their provider's control"

Good plan, but i hope they make it clear what not working means.

I assume working in dumb mode means it not working, but comms lost to the IHD would not be included - that will need to be made clear otherwise suppliers will be inundated.

But what if the meter is sending monthly readings but not 1/2 hourly - is it working or not?

Just a consultation document at the moment (https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/sites/default/files/2025-03/Smart Meter Guaranteed Standards of Performance-20250327120759.pdf) but it does include IHDs:

"Although a smart meter may still be sending automatic readings to their energy supplier, a consumer may still believe their smart metering system is faulty, such as the In-Home Display (IHD) not displaying correct tariff information, and
as such their overall experience of having a smart meter is negative. We consider consumers with issues with their IHD to be in scope of this standard and would expect that they are similarly supported."

That's going to be interesting when the makeup of someone's building can mean the only way of getting an IHD to work is to sit it right next to the meter (which could be in a basement outside of their actual home)

Absolutely. Even getting smart meters in a basement to communicate can be a challenge, never mind the countless people who live in blocks of flats and have no chance of using an IHD inside their home.

As others say I wonder how this will impact those who cannot have a working IHD due to the physical makeup of the building, also what about issues with supply (meters much be bought through government approved suppliers who seem unable to keep up with demand) and I also wonder if it will result in people deliberately tampering with their IHD to try and obtain compensation.

Alt HAN - supports comms over the mains wiring - to solve that problem.
You plug in a HAN module to a mains socket - and its like having the comms hub local.
One user recently reported had one fitted to solve his gas meter to comms hub communications.

MY parents smart meter has no comms because of filing sin the radio network used (they are in a mobile not spot too).  Will such people just get compensation paid every month forever?
    I think....
