  • Energy saving to return to prevent winter blackouts

Discount offers for households to use less electricity at peak times will return this winter as part of plans to minimise the risk of power cuts.

National Grid ESO said it expected to have sufficient capacity to meet demand but added it would be "prudent" to maintain the energy-saving scheme.

The network operator said the Ukraine war posed "risks and uncertainties" to gas supplies across Europe and the UK.

It said "tight days" on the UK energy grid would most likely be in January.

Oh good, I just broke into the start of my credit from last winter’s DFS scheme at the beginning of the month, if National Grid is offering to pay off the rest of this years energy bill too who am I to object.

Will be interesting to see if/how they adjust the payout rules for this year, could be quite the mess if enough people catch on the how easily last year’s IDA could be “abused”.

boo hiss - perhaps they could just pay battery owners to export instead?

I'm not sure about this but if someone else can confirm what I've just read about IDA in the comparative consultation document (from 2022 to 2023).

From what I can see in this NGESO comparison document https://www.nationalgrideso.com/document/281771/download  (at the very bottom of Scedule 3 last page of the comparison) IDA has been binned in its entirety.

The rest of their 14th June releases are in this link

    https://www.nationalgrideso.com/industry-information/balancing-services/demand-flexibility-service-dfs

Will be interesting to see if the consultation period ahead changes to conform with what Octopus is suggesting in the post above this.

If you had Outgoing Agile, export prices during the events were fairly high.

And a fair few people with (unregistered!) battery systems took advantage of this!  I left another forum as there were a hard core of members intent on gaming the system with their home-built battery systems.  None of them made vast amounts out of it, but the principle of what they were doing seemed morally wrong to me.

Only a few people though, so their selfish actions won't have had any significant impact.  It just bugs me that some see schemes like this as an excuse to grab money.  Always seems to be the same with any government-inspired scheme.  Saw the same with solar panels many years ago, and with "free" EV charge point installations.  Even had first hand experience at our last house with a rip-off merchant and cavity wall insulation.  Got a price assuming we weren't eligible for the grant.  Turned out we were and he charged us the exact same amount and trousered the grant.

People simply won't bother for 5p-40p, i cant see how it could work without the IDA.
