I am really surprised at the number of people on a money saving site who are keeping cash in containers around their homes for months on end rather than using it in place of other means of spending their money.
Is it not sensible to keep some cash on hand, in case of electronic payment methods having a meltdown!!

We currently have about £50 of notes in our wallet/purse between us, and if I were to guess, about £25-£30 in large change.

    So less than £100 overall.

Chicken feed in the grand scheme of things.   But at least I might stand a chance of persuading our local village shop to accept cash, even if his till wasn't working!!
And others have written of having thousands (the post at the top of this page mentions £2K-£2.5K).  I wouldn't call that chicken-feed.

A few 20ps and 50ps plus all £1s and £2s go in the car as carpark tokens.  The rest goes in a charity box.

Comes in handy for bus fares or Taxis for doctor or hospital visits. I'm not allowed allowed to drive (health issues) so if my other half is at work then that is my only choice of transport.

Strangely, I can afford to throw all loose change into the jar. I don't need (apart from taxis, they prefer cash for some reason!) or miss it. So emptying my pockets every night is just a way to have a surprise pot in my bank (usually) annually.
I'm writing a book on plagiarism. It wasn't my idea.

Very little spare change nowadays with the increased prevalence of places less keen on taking cash.
I've been finding more often now that small independents like the cash.  I might wonder if they are not reporting everything but as you do see them ringing transactions through the register I suspect that wouldn't be the case.  I believe completely that the switch from cash to card over the last 2 years has really pinched a lot of small businesses due to the %% they lose in transaction fees.

  • I use cash all the time so my change is used each and every time i go shopping - hence never have 'spare change' and don't have change sitting around the house.

Despite being something given to me by my grandmother some 50 years ago and innocently given a humerous name by her, that has stuck, it appears that people with delicate sensibilities don't like the name so I will not say where I put £1 and £2 coins (suffice to say they do not see much sunlight).

Anything less than a £1 coin gets thrown in the nearest bin - useless stuff.

I hate shrapnel and have long believed that we are long overdue getting rid of that dirty filthy unhygenic stuff we call cash.  it serves no purpose in the 21st century.

Not very money-saving!  I find it very useful indeed, for buying stuff.

It may not serve a purpose for you, but we are over 1/5 of the way through the 21st century and many people still use it some of the time (see many posts in this thread), some even all of the time (see the post above yours), so it clearly has a very definite purpose for many.

If you want to be 21st century and really do chuck change in the 'bin' I trust you use the metal recycling bin - it's really old-fashioned to chuck metal away. .

Surely a charity box would be better than a bin.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.

A bit like those who fill their fuel tank when it reaches half. Then carry around x litre of fuel for no reason while the oil company pocket that money.

I find a card more useful for buying stuff.  I only use cash when I receive cash-in-hand for helping someone out.

Maybe I am just fussier about hygiene ... maybe there are other reasons.  But I will not mourn the loss of that dirty filthy stuff.  The fact that some want to keep an antiquated payment system going just holds everybody back.

As far as recycling bin goes, no idea, what does the council do with rubbish in their bins?
