Used to save about £300 - £400 a year in large Brandy bottle.....but after starting to use contactless for everything 3/4 ago years its now about £5 - £10 a year0

I seldom use cash these days, but when I do have spare change, all my 1ps, 2ps and 5ps get put in a tin. All the larger coins I keep in a pot in case I need cash.
It reminds me of when I was at school and I had a huge jar where I'd put all my coppers. I kept that going all through secondary school until I went to uni (so about 7 years from Year 7 through to 6th Form). One day I got a phone call from my mum while I was at uni saying she had accidently broke the jar while moving house so she cashed in all the copper coins at the bank. Came to over £70!1 -
Haven't used cash for a couple of years now but when I did use it any spare change went into the charity box.0

In a small box but only £1 and 50p coins. Still need cash for window cleaner and car parking on the many occasions the ticket machine's contactless or card with PIN function doesn't work!

My pots haven't grown much the last 18 months for obvious reasons but I have:
A Terramundi pot for £2 coins, my last one took 3 years to fill and was just shy of £1k - hoping to try and fill for next years holiday spends.
A large brandy bottle with 20p's just the neck really to fill now.
A pot of coppers, doesn't really get used much, will probably bag up and exchange for £2 coins instead
A pot of loose change to use for car parking, if the children need some change or charity collections at homeMake £2023 in 2023 (#36) £3479.30/£2023
Make £2024 in 2024...0 -
I am really surprised at the number of people on a money saving site who are keeping cash in containers around their homes for months on end rather than using it in place of other means of spending their money.4

But why do you collect £2 coins to save for holidays? Why don't you just spend the money when you have it and then save the money in a bank account?
It just seems like a lot of extra hassle to have to count and pay in loads of coins in the bank.0 -

We currently have about £50 of notes in our wallet/purse between us, and if I were to guess, about £25-£30 in large change.
So less than £100 overall.
Chicken feed in the grand scheme of things. But at least I might stand a chance of persuading our local village shop to accept cash, even if his till wasn't working!!How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)1 -

My children can actually see the benefits of putting money away.
I do have other online accounts for saving for different things including holiday spends. My Terramundi pots have not really been set aside for something specific before but it feels like a nice bonus for what I consider little effort.
Next year we are planning a large holiday and expect to spend more on activities than usual, so my pot seems a nice way to have some additional money to spend, but at the same time if if it's not full I have other accounts to draw from.Make £2023 in 2023 (#36) £3479.30/£2023

Fair enough if you enjoy doing it and your children enjoy doing it as a hobby and then have fun counting it.
But it doesn't give you "additional money to spend" unless your poor at budgeting.
The problem i have with it is that if you say budget £50 a week cash for shopping for example and then save the change in the jar for holiday spending, then that will mean you don't really know how much you are going to be saving for the holiday and it's less easy to track how much you are spending on shopping.
I think it's far better to save a set amount for the holiday each week/month and then you will know exactly how much your spending on the holiday and also have an accurate budget for anything else.
